Above all, this is a bit like cheering on the Philly Phanatic as it does battle with the San Diego Chicken. Who gives a sh*t? Although it represents a more important battle, it's just a Kabuki theater version.

It's using celebrity to suck all the oxygen out of far more important discussions (have I mixed my metaphors enough yet?), including racism -- no, check that -- especially racism, the dirty secret that America has never fully addressed. If Imus truly learns from this experience, I think he'll be better for having been confronted for his bullshit. Compare that to Rush Limbaugh or "Dr." Laura.

I think it's up to NBC and CBS to decide if Imus is sincere. I can't really tell. I wouldn't shed any tears, if Imus was fired. I think he deserves whatever his sponsors decide. However, I don't think firing Imus is necessarily a blow against racism.

At this point, Imus' apologists are more pernicious than Imus has ever been.
