17. I think some do but not all. Insecurity may be common but not necessarily self hatred.

For example, the belief that homophobes are closeted gays bugs me. Yes, some of them are but most of the more virulent gay-bashers I know have been straight men who are also raging misogynists. Frankly, I think a lot of bigots and bullies have an abundance of self-regard and their anger stems from other people not deferring to them.

Doesn't change anything for me. It's obvious he was a racist, and it seems he was also envious of the virile black men who were getting all the hot women he couldn't. Perhaps that made him hate women even more. But the fact is that this crime was committed against WOMEN. ALL women. The OP thread title doesn't even mention that and it's a shame. To me anyway. It was a mass murder of women, just like the Richard Speck and Marc Lepine killings, and because violence against women is so prevalent, it's important to denounce these crimes and not dilute the message.

and to have an object reject him was beyond the pale. Probably seeing any woman he found attractive with anyone but him made him crazy and I am thinking he focused on black men perhaps due to racism. But the way he writes "every black man should get a young white hoe to hone up on", that is referencing the woman as an object/toy.

He wasn't a bad looking guy and he also had a good job but apparently there was something about his personality that was definitely off putting to women. Perhaps his objectifying them was readily apparent to the women he spoke to? Women are generally good at picking up on social/verbal cues and perhaps they found him creepy from the start.

You know the type: Thinks of women as walking pussy vending machines. Thinks that being obsequious to a woman and doing a few favors for her means she needs to give up the pussy and/or fall in love with him. Gets rejected by woman and blames her for being (rightfully) creeped out by him and his entitled attitude. I read his posts and I think he just didn't know how to socialize at all. Reading his blog it also appears he may have been interested in younger women who probably would not have had a man in his age group in their "sights".

I am betting he joined that gym to try and meet people, but that is a "hit or miss" kind of gamble just like any other social attempts to meet people. I belong to a gym and I am there to work out, not to socialize as I am happily married and have an active social life.

I see a lot of folks (men and women) at the gym I go to that are clearly looking around, hopefully none of them are as nuts at this guy.

I've spent more hours in the gym than I care to remember, and there is a certain type of person with obsessive personality disorders who benefit greatly from vigorous exercise. Especially weight training. First off, rage and depression are kept under control by the release of endorphins. Also, "gym exercise" is very regimented, especially weight training, and it suits people who have personality disorders and crave routine. They funnel their obsessions into the new activity. Former alcoholics, drug addicts often trade one unhealthy behavior into the healthier addiction. (Andre Dubus wrote an excellent short story about this very behavior, entitled The Pretty Girl) The problem arises again when the routine or gains are interrupted. I would bet anything that going to the gym may have provided a buffer for awhile (he basically says so himself) but eventually it was not enough.

I found that hilarious, and I don't usually find the p-word amusing... but I guess when a woman says "walking pussy vending machines" it's so sardonic that it's funny.

But yeah, the "nice" guys you are talking about are the pseudo nice guys. They are trying to manipulate women, and women pick up on it quickly. Unfortunately, women often fall prey to another type of manipulator: the angry sociopath. For some reason, this type of manipulation jams their bullshit detectors. The "nice guy" types see this, and not able to emulate the behavior, become even more annoyed at women's mating choices, and sometimes go off the deep end. The problem, of course, is the manipulation, and the willingness (of both sexes) to attempt relationships with these unhealthy people.

This guy had some kind of social deficit, but was not willing to change his standards of attractiveness, and/or was only interested in the shallow type who would not have been attracted to an actual nice, stable guy, not to mention one of the faux nice guys like him. His unwillingness to see his part in his situation was his problem.
