I looked it up online...and the only place I could find that quote was on lists of quotes like this list. I can't find any original source, and I doubt very much there is one. Ashcroft would never have called it illegal out loud.

Quick, somebody tell TheCoxwain that telegraphy by Morse Code over electric wires was invented in the 1840's! During the Civil War, you could intercept messages by listening in on the wire. That qualifies as the first example of "electronic surveillance".

It doesn't diminish the absurdity of the quote - I doubt that Lincoln specifically "authorized" it - but if the truth is going to have a well known liberal bias, the least we can do is get the facts right.

I appreciate the attempt at creating some historical balance in this collection, but is the OP seriously suggesting Santa Claus doesn't sneak around in the dark? I mean, remember, back in the 1920s there weren't as many streetlights in most cities.
