A state senator from Tennessee who has repeatedly railed against gay rights and condemned sex outside of marriage is vacating his seat after it was revealed that he had a sexual relationship with a 22-year-old intern.
Sen. Paul Stanley was first confronted with the accusations a month ago, but called himself a victim of rumors. However, as further details emerged, Stanley's words became less credible. He admitted to investigators that he had had an affair with intern McKensie Morrison and that he had taken explicit photos of her in his Nashville apartment.
Morrison's former boyfriend Joel Watts discovered the photos and reportedly threatened to publish them. Watts has since admitted to authorities that he tried to extort the senator for $10,000 in exchange for the photos' return, a deal Stanley considered, according to the Associated Press.
The Memphis Republican was a supporter, and sometimes sponsor, of several antigay bills in the state senate.
