The Bill Maher videos posted in DU forums now deleted by You Tube.
Edited on Sun Aug-02-09 11:01 AM by madfloridian
They are various lengths, some just a couple of minutes.

If you go to You Tube and search for Bill Maher you will see many videos there that still work.

What constitutes fair use of HBO videos?

Please tell me why some remain and some are deleted?

1. HBO seems to go through periods of getting stuffy
most notably during the inauguration last winter, when they deleted videos very quickly. If you didn't have HBO, tough shit.

They'll lose interest again, they always seem to.

3. But what are their rules?
What do they allow?

Why are the ones I linked to at You Tube still working, and all the ones in DU video not working.

2. Youtube has always been spotty about recognizing videos
The ones they have not removed have not been "discovered" by their recognition software yet, but the software is improving and videos are coming down by the hundreds.

And youtube does not give a flying fuck about fair use. Never did....if they have a corporation up their ass about videos, they remove them. Nobody there even thinks for a second whether the company that claims copyright is in the right....they just remove the video without review.

4. That is curious. Out of frustration, I set my DVR to record the show this afternoon.
I seldom watch Maher, but I've found his performance in this video clips to be increasingly annoying. I figure that watching the entire show will give me a better picture.

5. Is this the full show on his site?
The Windows Media Player that popped up is taking forever to download. Who the hell uses WMP, anyway? It's the worst player ever, especially for streaming!

Why do they have this "fair use" bullshit if they're streaming it? There's no advertising on the site that anyone would miss: http://www.hbo.com/billmaher/

7. The content of Bill Maher's show is the property of HBO
Doesn't matter if there is advertising or not, they can do with it as they please.

12. Probably stuffing Sharlett back in his bottle
You can imagine the screaming going on at 'C' street since he lifted the cover on Rachel and Real Time. Somebody must be leaning on HBO to make him invisible again.

15. regardless of whether said excerpts constitute fair use
(assume arguendo that they do... i'm not conceding thye are, this is just FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENT), youtube has the right to be more restrictive than fair use. youtube is a private company. iow, it's still their decision EVEN IF said excerpts meet fair use criteria. that simple
