I just wached 'Talk Radio' this evening...
It occurred to me that the murder in the film, like the murder of Alan Berg in real life, is something we all need to be thinking about a little these days. A stupid, ugly, right-winger, with a major hate on for Jews and others, finally worked up the courage to shoot someone. Threats came in both case, through the mail and on the phone, but were ignored...until the creep acted and someone died.

We're seeing the beginnings of that again, I think, with the recent Holocaust Museum shooting and the assassination of Dr. Tiller. Then there was that murder of a family by some of the Minutemen creeps. The fomentations of violence appear daily on the web.

We laugh a lot about the freepers and the fringe wingers, and it's true that most of them can barely get up the courage to leave their basements. But, there is another group of extreme right-wingers who are not so timid. Some have already acted, and the intensity of the "chatter" seems to be increasing.

I think it would behoove us all to pay close attention to the extreme fringe just now. If you see threats online that seem plausible, I'd encourage a report of what you see to the FBI, complete with links. www.fbi.gov will get you started. I am really concerned that there may be a wave of isolated violent incidents that might have been anticipated or that were signaled somehow, but not reported.

1. I don't laught about the threads.
To me they are way too serious, and why when they say... we need to organize to retake the country, and even go to war if necessary... I take them at their words...

Individual threads, or movement threads need to be taken very seriously.

2. It's everywhere
The fomentations of violence appear daily on the web.

Has been my concern for some time as well, but, I see it in many places. Calls for peoples death, not person specific, but groups. The 'de-humanizing' of the target, a long standing precursor to excuse the act. How many people have stood over a dead body and justified it by "they're not like us, they don't feel pain like us, it's not like they are human after all.."

The laughing, nod, nod, wink, wink, 'oh, it's just satire' statements concerning killing people have really started to catch my eye of late. Calls for 'action', the /cheer for violence when others do it, either here or across the globe. Extreme X hates group A, Extreme Y hates group B. How many posts, chats, banter and chatter are interchangeable except for the targets mentioned?

I think it would behoove us all to pay close attention to the extreme fringe just now.

I think it goes beyond the fringe. Pay attention to all activity, with an open mind and a critical eye, see how many people advocate violence on a daily basis. If Y's statement was made by X, about group A instead of group B... would you report it? If you would, will you?

If you wouldn't, why not?

3. Love that movie
Several scenes that really captured the tension of encountering people who are shall we say, batshit crazy. Crazy talk radio people no less. Imagine having this invisible legion of creepy freeper stalkers hiding in the shadows, fixated on you. With their conspiracy theories, bible quotations, bizarre fixations and enthusiasm for firearms. They can see you but you can't see them. Dr Tiller comes to mind.

Scary shit :scared:

4. Mike Malloy has mentioned that he was threatened by the same white supremacist scum who killed Berg
Naturally, he reported the threats to the police. They advised him to buy guns and learn how to use them, which he did. That same group of nazi assholes ("the Order") also had a string of bank robberies and terrorist acts in the Pacific Northwest before the feds caught up with them in the late 80's.

The names of the groups may change, but the over the top hate stays the same.
