Loyal readers,
Have you noticed something different about The Public Record?
http://pubrecord.org/ Earlier this month we unveiled our redesigned website and our new tagline: Intrepid New Journalism.
That’s exactly the type of journalism we have practiced over the past 12 months as we worked diligently to establish ourselves as a credible news source; one that you can trust to deliver the cold-hard facts on hot-button issues ignored by our mainstream colleagues.
We’ve published nearly 1,000 hard-hitting original news reports on topics such as the epidemic of suicides among our nation’s war veterans, the politicization of the Justice Department and, in what I consider our greatest achievement, we led the coverage exposing the unlawful program of torture enacted by the Bush administration. Countdown With Keith Olbermann, Harper’s, The Washington Independent, The Huffington Post and the Los Angeles Times have cited our investigative work in this area.
We have reported critically on the Obama administration’s lack of transparency, despite a campaign pledge for a more open government, regarding the secret initiatives of the previous administration. We’ve also taken the Obama administration to task for the increasing use of signing statements and it's use of state secrets as a defense in court cases that would further expose how George Bush and Dick Cheney twisted the law in the name of national security.
We have done this largely absent of financial support from our readers and we can no longer continue in that manner. So, I am excited to announce that we’ve received a generous $10,000 matching grant offer from a donor to help us in the short term.
Between August 1 and September 30, every dollar donated to The Public Record will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $10,000. Please help us meet this challenge by visiting our donate page on the website and contributing to our reporting fund and while you’re there consider signing up for a recurring donation. As a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit corporation, all donations are fully tax-deductible.
If you can’t help us out financially, consider sending this letter to someone you know who can or just spread the word about The Public Record. We believe that we are a project worth investing in and a news magazine worth reading.
Please click here to make a secure tax deductible donation with your credit card.
You can also make a donation through your PayPal account at thepublicrecord@gmail.com. We have a link directly to our Paypal account on the donate page of our website.
If you would prefer to send a check please send it to:

Remember, the news industry is going through radical changes right now. Those changes come at a cost as demonstrated by the shuttering of several publications, the slashing of editorial budgets, and the absence of critical reporting. But we have been there to pick up the slack. The Public Record is the future of journalism. We hope you will agree.
Thank You,
Jason Leopold
