Who the fuck is "Lionel"???
Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 10:11 AM by corkhead
"From the desk of Mark Green"...

Dear Friend:

We've only just begun.

* What does Air America 2.0 mean? For starters, it means that we have signed Lionel to host our 9am to noon hours. Lionel has been heard on WOR Radio and some 92 affiliates -- and has been the #1 host in his time slot in NYC. Adding him to the AAR family is a major boost to our already strong line-up.

* Also, we're pleased to announce that Sam Seder will be staying with our Air America family to host a new program from 4-7pm on Sundays called "Seder on Sunday." The program will concentrate on two subjects that Sam has been outspoken and smart about from the start of AAR -- the networks and the netroots...specifically, the Sunday political talkfests and the blogosphere's take on America.

Gawd, I hope it isn't Lionel Ritchie

very entertaining skeptic that used to be on our local AAR (when we had one) in the evening and weekend. I loved his show, actually.

27. not that I am aware of. Granted, because I seldom listen to the radio at night
I mostly only heard his show on the weekends, so maybe missed something, but I never heard him state that or say things I felt would indicate either of those.

And I have heard him blast away at the Religious Right and the NeoCons, but never the left, so I would say he is progressive. He labels himself as a skeptic, so I guess in some ways he could be the left's Glenn Beck, except that he uses facts and common sense instead of crap and hate.

30. Good to hear... I'm having trouble being objective, since
I really really liked Sam Seder (and I've got three years of pent up anger primarily over the loss of Marc Maron and Morning Sedition, as well as Unfiltered, Malloy and others).

31. You sound like me. I've listened to AAR since day one
First it was Liz Winstead and Unfiltered, then Morning Sedition, Janine Garafalo, Mike Malloy, and now Sam. Ironically, it was Al Franken that drew me to AAR in the beginning, but I found him to be a bore. I like Thom Hartmann, but I have to stream him because XM puts that Rush Limburger clone on at noon instead.

The only reason I didn't listen to Stephanie Miller was because she was up against Seder. Now that this is happening, I am not sure there is a reason for me to keep subcribing to XM and I will have to stream more.

10. I've heard him a few times from our local affiliate
They run his show on Saturdays. Can't say I've listened on a regular basis or even to the entire show, but for the few minutes that I'm in the car during that time of the day he's made me laugh a few times.

He has a distinctive voice, somewhat whiny/grating (IMO). The one thing I like is that he engages callers (vs. shouting over them), and then comes from behind with a smackdown they never saw coming.

11. He's ok. He sat in for David Bender a few weeks ago and
I recall him being on a panel broadcast on CSPAN with Thom Hartmann and some other radio folks. I guess I'd refer to him as a "gay acivist with a "radio program: based on what I have heard so far. He's definately a strong progressive, and seemed to be well informed, but he's not a Sam Seder.

I sure won't interrupt listening to Thom's Portland program to listen to him, but for those listening on the radio and no option to switch to alternate programming, I think this is an unfortunate decision.

Let's hope NovaM does something here...

Which left me with at least a little hope.

affiliates weren't carrying his show. They preferred Stephanie Miller or their own local programming and that is not good.

43. cutting your air time by 80% is being dropped
i also find it interesting that on the AAR website they say specifically what his show is going to be about, and it appears like Green is telling Sam what to focus on.

They could have moved things around, rather than demote him. I think his show was decent.

40. Lionel...
www.lionelonline.com

After many successful years in local talk radio and on television, Lionel has realized one of his dreams. He began his nationally syndicated program on January 3, 2000. The show, airing Monday through Friday from 10 PM to 1 AM and Saturday from 5 PM to 8 PM (both Eastern Time) is an eclectic mixture of current events and off-the-wall topics infused with Lionel’s special brand of humor.

Before that, Lionel was the host of Snap Judgment on Court TV. The program was consistent with Lionel’s persona, offering an irreverent and intelligent look at the lighter side of, what he calls, "The train wreck they refer to as the American judicial system." Lionel was the morning drive host on WABC TalkRadio in New York City for five successful years. He also hosted special reports for the ABC Radio Network and WCBS NewsRadio in New York.

While attending Law School in his native Tampa, Florida in 1980, Lionel discovered talk radio station WFLA and soon became a regular caller. His formula was simple: "Be the first caller, never talk about what the host is discussing and, wherever possible, insult the host and his family." In his "other" career, Lionel went on to become a noted prosecutor and criminal defense attorney. Dominating the conversation became Lionel's forte.

His media career began in 1988 when the wife of the WFLA Operations Manager suggested to her husband that Lionel would be a great host. He was given a weekend shift and within a year was promoted to afternoon drive. The President of ABC radio heard Lionel’s show and made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. In 1993 Lionel left Florida, happily abandoning his law career, and moved to WABC radio in New York. Eventually taking over the highly competitive morning drive show, Lionel went on to set records for ratings for WABC in that time slot. In the fall of 1996, Lionel moved to the afternoon drive spot, offering a new audience a taste of his unique brand of radio. He had just achieved the highest ratings in that slot since taking over for Bob Grant when, in their infinite wisdom, the management at WABC decided to move him back to mornings in December of 1997.

Lionel’s form of radio is topical, dynamic and funny. A raconteur and master of the English language, he engages his listeners daily with his rapid-fire delivery and offbeat takes on the day’s top issues. Lionel has been named one of the 100 Most Important Talk Show Hosts in the country by Talkers Magazine. He appears regularly on a variety of national television programs and networks including CNN and MSNBC.

How does Lionel describe himself?

"Irreverent, ribald and caustic: these are Lionel’s good points. He’s a billingsgater, a paranymph of the Boeotian and a paronomasiac. In other words, Lionel has no idea what a talk show host is, and that’s the way he likes it!" You look it up!
