When was the last great Police Bash on DU?
We all know DU follows trends of the moment and right now the trend seems to be police bashing.

Anyone remember the last time the vitriol rose to this level in regard to police?

We very badly need to bring our police forces back under control. Citizens' review boards with termination power would be a big step in the right direction.

51. You can try to deny there is a problem with police and policing in this country.
That doesn't make it go away.

Just do a Google search for "officer-arrested or officer-convicted or officer-sentenced" for a few days. You will see a veritable cavalcade of sex crimes, DWIs, assaults, wife beatings, robberies of drug dealers, drug dealing, etc.

Ask yourself why we're doing 40,000 SWAT raids a year in this country. Remember what SWAT is for? Hostage situations, terrorist attacks, extremely dangerous situations...but now we routinely do petty drug raids as if we were attacking an Al Qaeda hideout in Baghdad.

Ask yourself why so many urban youth see the police as an occupation force.

Ask yourself why police perjury is so common there's even a word for it: testilying.

Law enforcement is dangerously out of control and unaccountable, in my opinion. And I think a whole lot of people agree with me.

59. Pardon me. You seemed to imply there were only 52 bad cops a year.
Even we critics of bad policing don't have the time or energy to post every incident of cops lying, beating someone down, tasering them for no good reason, shooting them for no good reason, or doing mass stop and frisks of minority youth, or, or, or...

There used to be a web site called Badcopnews.com, but it's gone now. The nasty shit is out there every day if you care to look for it, though.

with police over the decades, and no, 52 doesn't cut it. but for every bad cop how many good cops stand behind them, allow it to happen, dont protect the victim. being a person of integrity, i see a lack in the officer that can condone by silence or support, bad behavior. morally reprehensible

Who is hired to protect whom? Who takes hours of classes to learn how to defuse rather than escalate a situation? Who is taught to react to differing situations with approaches warranted by the situation and when to arrest and when to not arrest despite what the book calls for?

I like Cops for reasons I will not get into but there are cops and there are Cops. I have an issue in this situation and how it was handled. The Cops had nothing -- read this:

the time when a BART police officer in Oakland, CA shot a black man to death in the back, after the man had been submitted and was lying flat on his stomach. I don't think "Fuck the police" would be an overreaction...around the same time, there was a guy in Texas who was followed by a cop to his house for suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle, even though he was the registered owner of that vehicle. When he got to his own house the cop shot him in the stomach for no reason. I could go on and on, but there are just far too many of these kind of shocking incidents with lawless cops to name.

that crowley didn't use the best judgment imo. the arguments that he's a racist etc. are simply foolish and unsupported by evidence. the fact that NONE of the (7 or 8) civilian witnesses has come forward to the media (which would lap it up ) to contradict crowley's account of gates' behavior is quite telling as to the fact that he is honest.

this is a guy with an excellent record, who was confronted by a raging horse's ass who actually said "i'll see your mama on the porch" and handled himself not perfectly, but quite well.

i REALLY wish there was a video of this incident.

64. he's trying to subvert the dominant paradigm see...
see he teaches classes on racial profiling awareness, so he can subtly skew the teaching towards all the other bigots like him and sabotage the entire program. it's all part of the grand conspiracy (tm). this is also why he chose to work for cambridge PD, well known as one of the most liberal cities, in a liberal metropolitan area, in a liberal state. i went to academy with a few harvard PD officers (most of harvard U properties are in cambridge), and they knew all aobut the "people's republic of cambridge". the idea that this evil racist cop is some sort of stealth racist in cambridge pd of all places despite NO evidence that he has ever done or said anything racist, despite the fact that not one of the civilian witnesses has come forward to refute his officer's report observations of gates' horses ass behavior, the fact that officers in his dept. and elsewhere of various racial backgrounds have come out in his defense, the fact that obama (and you can bet dollars to doughnuts that obama's staff did some research on crowley before obama's apology) paises him, etc. means nothing to the bigots who assume that because a white officer arrested a black guy. he's a RACIST oh noes!

like i said before, i think an argument can be made that crowley didn't use the best judgment. iow, he should have justlet gates rant away on his front porch and just walk away. if the PD got complaints from neighbors about the yelling, send the officers back and go from there. crowley obviously felt otherwise, and i wasn't there, so i'm not going to fault his judgment by saying he was flat wrong, i just think an ARGUMENT can be made he might have been better off walking away and letting gates be a putz and vent his steam.

that's why i wish there was a video. i am sure it would be useful in painting a "picture". like i said, the whole mama/porch thing evidences a guy who was just being a complete ninny.

i also wonder how much of this is a class thing with gates. iow, i am sure he didn't like a WHITE officer (god forbid) daring to question his great eminence (tm), but it wouldn't surprise me if it's more a class than a race thang. iow, how dare a lowly peon blue collar cop question HIM!>!>!> don't they know WHO HE IS!!!

All you police lovers can join in with the rest of us. C'mon, I know you can. "Fuck the BAD police! Fuck the swaggering badged bullies! Fuck the corrupt cops!"

See, that didn't hurt at all.

See, that's why people don't like or trust cops. Those who rise to defend them refuse to acknowledge the serious issue that gives rise to such animosity. There are too many asshole cops, too much defensiveness and opposition to citizen oversight, and too many times we've heard nothing but silence from other cops when someone's been caught doing something flagrantly wrong.

No one should hate the asshole cops more than the good ones. They're not their "Brothers (and sisters) in Blue." They're the police profession's version of the pedophile priests. Cut them loose and/or prosecute them, and decry their behavior as loud as possible. If you don't, you're just as guilty as they are.

No excuses.

On edit: Oops... didn't mean to hit "edit."

The bewildering part for me is watching otherwise intelligent people broad brush "civil servants" into aggravated, abstract vacuums; a net resultant can be negative aspersions upon anybody doing anything for anyone from within a municipal capacity. And it does seem to me that unless such folks are advocating the dissolution of civil order introducing then anarchy as their preferred option; that the flat-matter of "Pigs Suck Always!!" is not enough to sustain such a transition into lawlessness, eh fuck it...

Maybe I can get a jaunty new/romantically revolutionary beret out of this 'new dem death-to-the-cops deal' somehow

We're a democracy. If we didn't feel we needed to employ law enforcement officers, we could stop doing so very, very quickly. I know there are good cops, just as there are bad cops. What worries me most is the sense among various groups less powerful than law enforcement as a whole that they absolutely must bow and scrape to law enforcement to stay out of jail and/or injury free. The level of intimidation that many, many cops employ out of ego or whatever is outrageous and has to go.

People who any other day would rage about " the rich" and defend "the worker" totally switched gears, taking the side of a man who lives in two very expensive houses and probably makes over (perhaps well over) $350K per year who for whatever reason decided to make life miserable for a union worker.

People like me, who might any other day be railing about police abuse, especially of skateboarders, are defending the cop, demanding that everyone stick to the facts, and even hinting at the idea that I might think the whole thing was staged.

And of course, all of us taking a nice mental break from important things to sort out two pissy little men having a slap fight in public.

37. It's the clever comments that keep me coming back to GD.
Witty, insightful. Or inciting, whichever.

50. criticizing pigs isn't "bashing"
I'll quit "bashing" cops when the so-called "good" cops stop enabling the pigs.

66. Probably the last time the police did something stupid.
I believe they killed a man at a train station in the bay area. That may have been it.

Or they beat up a hancuffed girl in a holding cell. That might've been it right there.

Or they threw a party to remenisce about how they beat a shitload of protesters in Chicago '68. Maybe that was it.

You see, they fuck up so much, it's hard for me to remember which one was the latest one.

Probably one of those, though.
