Stan Brock: Single Payer Would Put Me Out of Business
A single payer health insurance system would put Stan Brock out of business.

Brock is the founder of Remote Area Medical.

Remote Area Medical has set up in Wise, Virginia this weekend.

Providing free medical care to 1,600 people on Friday.

Brock turned away hundreds more this morning.

In an interview with Single Payer Action, Brock said that single payer national health insurance would put him out of business in the USA.

“A single payer system would put us out of business if it includes dentistry and vision care,” Brock said.

2. Aww poor Stan Brock.
Well, when we do get SP, at least if he loses his job, he won't be without healthcare.

“Yes, then a single payer system would put us out of business and we’d go back to Haiti, and Guatemala and places where we belong,” Brock said.

Remote Area Medical is a non-profit.

From Wikipedia: Remote Area Medical Volunteer Corps (RAM) is a Knoxville, Tennessee-based, non-profit, volunteer, airborne medical relief corps that provides free health care, dental care, eye care, veterinary services, and technical and educational assistance to people in remote areas of the United States, and around the world.<1> RAM was founded in 1985 by Stan Brock who worked as an assistant to Marlin Perkins on Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom<2>. The group's work was originally confined to Third World countries, but later shifted towards the US.<3>

10. Remember that guy from Cigna on Moyers a few weeks ago?
He said he was stunned when he saw one of these clinics (it may have even been Brock's clinic. I don't remember.) I got chills when he talked about how stunned he was to see Americans in animal stalls waiting in line for health care. Animal stalls.

14. and the republicans think long waits will scare people off single payer
One thing we could do to offset that is to train more doctors, and physicians assistants, and nurse practicioners.

18. Cigna is one of the worst for covering health problems
From what I've heard. He should be ashamed on behalf of his industry.

HEALTH CARE IS A HUMAN RIGHT, NOT A BUSINESS.

12. Yes, that's very likely.
Although, there's nothing stopping Brock from expanding or even adapting his services.

5. So what? He should be happy to be out of a business that thrives on
the misfortune of others. And by misfortune, I mean those that live in the United States and don't have access to medical care.

22. Sorry, I'm touchy about this subject
don't have much patience for satire at this point. I read a headline and react.

I realized that they were a non-profit, but didn't know the article was satire.

I'm so disgusted at this whole health care debacle. Almost wish I hadn't watched Sicko. I knew things were bad, but seeing how people in other countries are treated with dignity, and how healtcare isn't a for-profit industry, well it makes me "sicko."

19. No.
“Yes, then a single payer system would put us out of business and we’d go back to Haiti, and Guatemala and places where we belong,” Brock said.

In other words, the richest country in the world shouldn't need him to care for hundreds of thousands of desperate americans who have no care. It's a disgrace that he is necessary here.

23. WTF?
How does he make his money now - if not off of subsidies?

He wouldn't go out of business at all, he'd just have to adjust his business plan, and provide care that can compete with everyone else.

29. because there would be no need for free charitable health care.
Brock is making a good point. He would have to go to other countries that do not provide health care for everyone, like for example Haiti.
