If I was a cop, this is the defense line I would give for everything having to do with abuse.

Blame the lawmakers.

I would say...

The politicians have made too many things a crime. We are forced to put people in jail for stupid stuff that shouldn't be outlawed. The criminal code has become to big and the public doesn't like having big court in their lives. It's not our fault. Blame them.

That's the only answer cops have left that makes any sense.

If I was a cop that is what I would be saying.

Just a suggestion.

1. Okay. You'd be fired the next day.

3. Yeah, well, one of the laws that have these legislators passed make police brutality a crime.
Crowley had it right -- spin, twist, obfuscate, lie, confuse.

4. Are you kidding, cops love the laws.
They've fought to get some passed around here like the crime of "intimidating a police officer" and "lying to a police officer" (of course, the feds have that one).

They love to have laws to charge you with, they stack 'em.

5. Well, when the backlash comes they are going to wish they didn't do that.

And it's coming SOON!
