I Just Returned $50.00 plus in Grocerys.....

.....to the Kroger's down the street that I purchased yesterday.....

Basically this return was .......2pds Ground beef.....Looked good yesterday.....
2Pds Cube Steak......Looked good yesterday......bad smell today
3 Frozen Pizza.......when opened looked like they were thawed and refrozen when opened
1/2 Gal Ice Cream......when opened looked like it was melted and refrozen when opened
3pds fresh Chick Breast.......looked fresh when bought....today a rotten smell.
Sack of Taters......Growing new taters in the bag.

My fridge is kept at 38 degrees and I have never had this much food bought go bad at one time. The dates looked recent on the frozen item and the meat stated it was packaged yesterday morning...

The shift manager was very accommodating and told us we could either refund or shop for replacement items so we replaced them and he did the check out...said he was sorry and gave us a $200.00 shopping card cause of our loyalty.

1. What do you think happened?
My guess is that they left deliveries out on the dock too long causing the meat to go bad and the frozen stuff to thaw.

12. Some of it is those open refrigerators they have
I bought salmon from Kroger in the past that was not exactly fresh when I got it home. I think some of it has to do with the refrigerator displays that they and most other stores have. Not only do they not stay cool enough, IMO, but they waste huge amounts of energy. They need doors!!! I won't buy seafood from Kroger unless it's in the freezer case or in their seafood case, on ice.

2. Ahh the old pink on the outside, grey-brown on the inside ground beef pack
I hate that so much.

My store is usually pretty good about removing old meat, but it still happens sometimes.

7. That signals you have fresh beef, actually
The pink color is due to the action of the fluorescent lighting that turns the surface bright red. The inside isn't exposed so it's a natural greyish brown. Look at the "quick sale" burger meat, it's greyish brown all the way through. Old meat loses its ability to change color under light.

However, if you get it home and it smells rotten, it is rotten. Someone left it someplace outside the chiller and store employees didn't find it soon enough.

The OP needs to question whether or not to go back to this Kroger store. It seems they're putting a lot of stuff back that really should have been tossed out.

4. Sometimes they have a power outage at the stores, and
all the food is spoiled. Too many times they just sell it anyway.

5. Or the delivery truck. I am seeing more of this
and it may be the truck did not run their cooler unit to save gas.

10. We have noticed that a lot of the stuff we buy goes bad really quickly
any more.

It's ridiculous, and it pisses me off.

13. Sucks that food was wasted.
Regardless of the reason, but someone along the line (absolutely not suggesting it's you the end consumer) did something wrong.

Glad you didn't consume any of that and get sick.
