Intel: Antitrust fine violated human rightsNew Mexico Business WeeklyIntel is appealing the record-setting antitrust fine that the European Union levied in May, saying that the fine violated the company's human rights, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The EU hit Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) with a fine of 1.06 billion Euros, about $1.5 billion, for offering rebates to computer makers who chose Santa Clara, Calif.-based Intel’s chips over those made by Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD), which is based out of Sunnyvale, Calif. The fine was the largest ever levied in a monopoly-abuse case.
The exact arguments aren't known yet, but Intel and other companies who are arguing that the fines violate human rights, base their cases on the fact that a political bureaucrat, and not a judge, levy the fines. The bureaucrat is antitrust commissioner Neelie Kroes of the Netherlands.
The companies maintain that Kroes has too much power, because she gets to supervise investigations, make a ruling, as well as decide the punishment.
One of Intel's largest chip manufacturing plants is located in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, immediately northwest of Albuquerque.
