JEFFERSON DEFENSE RESTS CASE (in 2 hours)

I'm a New Orleanian who has been following the trial of Ex-Congressman William Jefferson. Based one what i've read, the Government's case is not nearly as strong as most people assumed it would be. The defense is basically saying that he is not guilty b/c his actions were not "official acts" but rather private business dealings. Of course, I don't believe that he didn't use his office to line his pockets (and those of his family members) but I'm not sure that the Government has proven that he is guilty of these 16 federal counts beyond a reasonable doubt. Their "star" witness never testified and reportedly has mental and other problems. Jefferson never delivered the cash to the VP, which is why most of it was found in his freezer. It is possible that he intended to keep the money and let the business woman believe that he had delivered the bribe.

Here is a website with all the articles about the story (latest stories are at the bottom:

The political climate here will certainly be affected by the outcome of this trial, which should be finished next week. If he is acquitted, he will likely run for his seat again and as much as I hate to say this, he is not unlikely to get elected.

So, what do you all think? Has anyone else been following it? Any lawyers here have an opinion?
