Palin's Popularity Plummets
Palin Favorability Rating Dips As She Nears Exit, Poll Finds

By Jon Cohen and Philip Rucker
Washington Post Staff Writers
Friday, July 24, 2009

As Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin prepares for the next stage of her political career, a majority of Americans hold an unfavorable view of her, and there is broad public doubt about her leadership skills and understanding of complex issues, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.

Last year's Republican vice presidential nominee remains a deeply polarizing figure, and there are warning signs for her as she emerges as a possible contender for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination. While she is still widely popular among those in her party, she has lost ground among Republicans generally and among the white evangelicals who are so critical in the early presidential primaries.

Overall, the new poll found that 53 percent of Americans view Palin negatively and 40 percent see her in positive terms, her lowest level in Post-ABC polling since she first appeared on the national stage last summer as Sen. John McCain's running mate.

The dip in Palin's favorability comes as she gets ready to leave office Sunday with about 18 months remaining in her term and plans to turn her attention to national politics. Palin, 45, has said she intends to campaign for other like-minded candidates, and speculation has been rampant that she may seek the GOP nomination to oppose President Obama.

1. It's about time. I suppose the die hard ones are now realizing Palin is a real piece of work.
She lied to them during the campaign. That bridge to nowhere only got the no thanks AFTER it became a deadly unpopular topic.

She's been accused of how many ethics violations now? Almost too many to count. Sorry, Sarah, but where there's smoke there's usually a fire...someplace. Your fire just hasn't been exposed (yet).

I say good riddance to her and her slimy family. The environment, wildlife, and the people of Alaska will likely benefit greatly once she's gone.

2. What is there to doubt about her leadership skills and understanding of complex issues?
They're non-existent.

4. Read the fine print: 40% still see her in positive terms- that's still amazingly high.
I don't see this as a big change from after she demonstrated her lack of knowledge and ability during the campaign. She'll still have crowds of supporters, but mostly fringe groups, gun and drilling fanatics, and dimwits and i predict she won't get anywhere near another political office in her lifetime.

6. Well, Bush still holds about 33% support so 40% isn't unreasonable.
I'm just waiting to see how Palin reacts when her primary opponents really start digging for dirt.

Will her persecution-complex still fly with her base when it's fellow Republicans trying to knock her down?
