Canadian troops accidentally shot and killed a young Afghan girl at dusk on Tuesday, a spokesman for Task Force Afghanistan confirmed Wednesday.

One round was fired at the ground to warn off a motorcyclist who was approaching a Canadian foot patrol at high speed and "we believe it was a ricochet" that killed the girl "and that is was one of our bullets, but an investigation will determine exactly what happened," Maj. Mario Couture said.

A joint Canadian-Afghan team was investigating, he said.

"It is an absolute tragedy that an innocent child was killed during a patrol," Couture said. "No doubt the pain of the parents must be unbearable."

Canadian forces had been in touch with the family, he said.
