3. It's Ok To Vote 'No' Right?
I think he deserves some financial penalty but I don't think he should be fired.

7. Normally Free, Unfortunately.
And that's the way for any sort of prejudiced, bigoted etc statements. I don't think that's right. I think he needs to have consequences for his insensitivity and stupidity and needs those consequences to have some form of impact. I'm of the opinion, however, that firing is too harsh a one.

11. Does that apply to everyone, or just ppl like Imus?
If my boss decides to pop off in a meeting about n-word this and ho that, he should just get his pay docked and keep his job? I don't think so.

12. That's Just Silly.
If you think for a second that the guidelines of 'for entertainment shock jock radio' are the same as those required within a formal business meeting, then I just simply don't know what to tell ya.

Although it'd be helpful to know why you think blatant racists should get air time.

10. Well, You And I Have A Difference Of Opinion There.
I think the comments were absolutely racist. I also think that his use of them was not borne from hatred or true bigotry, but rather from stereotypical ignorance, insensitivity, and attempt to appear 'hip'. I think he's a total fool and shake my head in disgust that he could say something so stupid. But I don't see any malice or hate in his comments; only stupidity and lack of understanding. If I had sensed the former, I'd 100% support his dismissal as a consequence.

20. So then how many times does he have to do it before it
changes from "stereotypical ignorance, and insensitivity," to just being a racist? Because the list of his "stereotypical ignorance, and insensitivity, is pretty fucking long.

15. If this were the first time he'd said something so loathesome, I'd tend to agree with you
With him, it's a pattern, and nothing has changed his behavior in the past.

16. Everyone can start the flames
I am black and a American. Neither of these makes me an expert in anything. I was listening to Imus and heard his comments the day he said them. Neither of these makes me an expert in anything. However, I don't think Imus should be taken off the air and fired. Do I think he should be forced to apologize to the people he insulted. You bet I do. He said some stupid and very hurtful things as a joke. And he was joking. But he didn't take into account was that these were kids he was talking about. Kids who shouldn't be subjected to this type of bullshit. The same kids that he attempts to help all the time. So shame on him. Imus does a lot for kids with cancer and other illnesses? Does he take credit for it? Yes he does in his own way, but so what. Its about the kids anyway. Imus was the one screaming about the treatment of the troops when other americans didn't know, didn't care to know or where only using them to under score their political agenda. Imus raised money for the injured troops. Imus did in fact talk about sickle cell when others ignored it. Imus has no problem flying kids on his private jet when they need a flight for treatment. Imus calls the war bullshit.

Imus, with the help of his crew over the years has said a lot of things that have pissed me off. But we all need to take a deep breath and put this stuff in context. Words will never hurt as much as actions. Imus said some dumb ass things and he more than likely will again. I only wish I could take back some of the stupid and insensitive remarks I have made to my own love ones. At least I wasn't on being broadcast on tv when I said them. Everyone here would know what a dumb ass jerk I can be. But, Imus realized that he made a mistake and is at least accepting responsibility for being an idiot. What about all the assholes who are invited again and again on tv shows that say anything they want and never suffer any ill effects for their conduct. They use everyone from unborn babies, unwed mothers, poor people, illegal aliens, the troops and minority groups for their own agenda and never ever suffer any ill effect. As a matter of fact they make the Today Show the evening news and garner even more attention the more outlandish their remarks.

I will call for Imus' firing when Rush, Ann, Sean, Bill and Michele are no longer treated like the media darlings they simply are not. At least Don his attempting to make amends. I will call for Imus' firing as soon as we have a media that does not cow to this administration and suck off the GOP on a daily basis. Bottom line: Imus is the least of my worries.

17. Great post...Thank you
I was beginning to think there were no reasonable people left here

I want to know the origin of the phrase Imus used.

I work with a black captain of a prison, and he said it was a hip hop

or gang expression. Of course he associates everything with gangs,

so he may not be the most objective person to ask

19. I'm not black, but I'm a woman and I say fire his ass
His comments were not just racist, they were incredibly misogynistic as well. He said what he did about the Rutgers women because they weren't suitably attractive enough for him. He was comparing them to the "cuter girls" on another team. He called the Rutgers women nappy haired hos after making several disparaging comments about their looks. 'Cause you know, that's soooo relevant to basketball, right?

Rush got canned when he said what he did about Donovan McNabb. Jimmy the Greek got canned for comparing a male athlete to a monkey. What do you think the reaction would be to Imus making racist comments about a male college or pro team? How much do you want to bet that if he'd avoided racism in his comments and just denigrated the Rutgers team as women we'd barely be hearing anything about it?

I'm not trying to pull a my-oppression-is-worse-than-yours thing here, but I am pointing out that women of all races are told to "lighten up" far too often.
