in an attempt to garner support for that very thing.

7. good point. I have tried to have intellectual discussions only to have them degrade to name calling
....looking on the internet for serious intellectual discussion, how quaint.

9. Which is exactly why I think there needs to be a designated forum
When you try to post anything like that in GD, it usually attracts that type of post. This way maybe we could maintain - or require - a certain level of respect...or at least sincere questioning.

13. would there be an intelligence test to access the forum? I'd go for that
Access based on IQ, tell Skinner and Elad to get working on it toot sweet. Either that or we could send in copies of our college transcripts to grant us access to certain levels.

Hey, anybody got anthing on "Rawlsekians", that strange amalgam of John Rawls and Libertarian theory? I'm researching for a paper.

18. I'm a fan of Rawls, but I hadn't heard of "Rawlsekians" before.
Then again, it's been about 18 years since I last studied Rawls in college. I'm going to have to go google "Rawlsekians" now. :)

20. You won'r find a lot - at least I didn't
Edited on Sat Jul-18-09 07:15 PM by ashling
outside of occasional blogs.

David Gordom (libertarian) wrote a piece in The American Conservative that talks about this (that should come up on google: Going off the Rawls, 7/28/2008) and there is a smattering of other stuff, but not really a lot of substance. Apparently these libertarians believe that his "veil of ignorance" is a good starting point, but that Libertarian principles would, naturally, be chosen. Kind of an amalgam of Rawls and Hayek (with whom I am not too familiar.) I even read somewhere that Rawls' son suggested that his theories were very compatible with conservatism . . . apart from the whole distributive justice thing, I guess (LOL)

19. I'm sure you've already found this much for yourself already...
http://www.amconmag.com/article/2008/jul/28/00024/

...but I just wanted to post this here for others. It wasn't enough to give me a clear idea of exactly what a "Rawlsekian" is, but it was enough for me to see some merit in tinkering around in Rawls philosophy when it comes rewards for effort and talent.

33. I said philosophy/political theory
I guess I could have said political "philosophy/theory", but it's essentially the same thing. If you still have problems with that, read History of Political Philosophy and get back to me. The book covers Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, St. Augustine, Machiavelli, Francis Bacon, Thomas Hobbes, Renes Descartes,Spinoza, Montesquieu, Hume, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Neitzsche, to name but a few.
