As a little kid in the 1970's I watched the news and there was only one anchor for me
Harry Reasoner. :eyes: :dunce:

But as an adult I respected and appreciated Walter Cronkite (and Dan Rather actually). Cronkite in retirement was refreshingly fearless in his inquisitiveness and rather fearless in his liberalism.

RIP you great man. :patriot:

1. There was real depth on the networks back then; not just Cronkite but Reasoner and Smith,
Huntley and Brinkley--all of whom gave us more of the story in 1 minute than CNN, etc. can do in an entire day of programming.

2. For some reason my parents always watched John Chancelor on NBC

My guess is that he was the most conservative of the three, or at least the least liberal.

One of my first memories is Chancelor talking about something called "watergate". At the time I thought it was about a big gate with some water underneath. It made no sense. :)

4. I think we watched Reasoner because the main news broadcast in the Bay Area was ABC
Channel 7 Newsscene which was nationally recognized and good but sadly paved the way for today's local news dreck and things like Hard Copy.

3. When I was growing up and trying to imagine what "God" looked and sounded like,
I could only imagine Walter Cronkite. Plus, he kind of had the last word in our house. My father changed his mind about Vietnam due to Cronkite.
