In power, Dick Cheney didn't worry about what other people said.
George W. Bush's omnipotent vice-president was a man entirely without doubts, a happy misanthrope who thrived on being opposed. “If a principle is worth having, it's worth fighting for,” he once said, as if admitting being wrong were the greatest sin.
“I think he understands that the vilification of the moment is not the final word,” historian Victor Davis Hanson observed.
But what happens when the vilification lingers on, and threatens to make Mr. Cheney pay the price for his self-aggrandizing vice-presidency? The attacks are suddenly coming thick and fast, with a fervour that jeopardizes not just his legacy but also the agenda of his White House successor (in power, if not official title), Barack Obama.
This week, Mr. Cheney and his associates were implicated publicly in setting up a covert Central Intelligence Agency hit-squad program while facing renewed criticism for their role in implementing torture techniques at Guantanamo Bay and devising a dubious domestic eavesdropping program. ..............(more)
