Admin/Mod - Question on Rec/Unrec
I was reading this thread:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x3973016

And the first response mentioned people unrecing the thread (freepers). I'm wondering if you're able to see who is rec'ing/un'recing threads like you can on polls. Sure I think the unrec program is a great way to keep DU's greatest page in tact, but on the flipside - I think it's also a way to weed out some trolls.

Just curious.
Thanks.

1. So if one un-recs a foolish thread, one is a troll?

3. No, not at all.
But if one is constantly unrecing legit threads, posting questionable posts, and other trollish things - then a pattern develops, and the reccing system might jsut be another way to weed them out.

2. How would that help weed out trolls?
Not only would a moderator have to notice the unrec, but they'd also have to look at posting history. A click on an option does nothing to identify anyone as a troll or not. It's just a single point of data.

Since not everyone here agrees about the value of individual posts, so an unrecommend says nothing about the trolliness of a DUer.

4. Read #3, but also...
If you look at the thread I linked - what reason would people need to legitimately unrec that thread?

7. What I saw was that the thread had 60+ recommendations.

5. I know this software. They can see everything and this has been discussed infinitum.
Also, Skinner has put the whole "issue" to rest.

It stays and threads like this will soon start to be locked.

8. It's a misconception that the unrekers are Freeps. Mostly they are
the flamers who are fanatics for ANY of the groups in the DU/Democratic coalition: The true believers who are the shock troops for their particular cause, who swarm against whoever posts an opinion contrary to their group's. Very fanatical and organized.

Also, there are mischievous individuals with personal vendettas.

9. Duplicates, misleading thread titles, uninformative thread titles, bad writing, disagreement with
thread content, general agreement with thread content but disagreement with the way the argument is presented, lack of clarity in the purpose of a thread - all legitimate reasons to unrec a thread.

People need to shed their thin skins. Not everyone is going to agree with you, and that doesn't mean people are right wing. When you have documentation from god saying you're correct in everything you do, perhaps you can get upset (but if your god is different from someone else's, they don't have to agree with your god's ruling).

10. Start with the proposition that most GD threads should be unrecommended.

Like this one.

If you've read the rules, you know the answer to your question is: email the admins, don't start a thread.

If you've read Skinner's post on this topic, you know the answer to your question.

So, this comes down to you not following the rules and not bothering to read the posts Skinner made on the topic in his thread.

11. Yes, they can see. Happens to me all the time...
Of course, I doubt the people doing it to me would consider themselves trolls. :P

It's all good.

12. Another thread and replies proving the Us. and Them mentality around the new toy
another reason Admin and others may factor into their calculations those who have mostly lost interest in Rec or UnRec, in playing a bloodsport with "votes" disappearing down the drain and unbelievable assumptions -- as seen above -- about Who's Who.
