oh noes!! we can't tax the rich!!!!
Hmmm, what is rich then??? Lets look at some simple examples on some income levels:

Example 1: "Rich family" makes 480k per year, breaks down to 40k per month. 40k to have taxes taken out, pay the mortgage, pay the bills, pay the car payment, save from. $40,000 per month. Income.

Example 2: Working family making 48k per year, breaks down to 4k per month. 4k to have taxes taken out, pay the mortgage, pay the bills, pay the car payment, save from. $4,000 per month. Income.

Example 3: Working single mother making 24k per year at Walmart, breaks down to 2k per month. 2k to have taxes taken out, pay the rent or mortgage, pay the bills, pay the car payment, save from. $2,000 per month. Income.

So per month we have 3 examples.

$40,000 per month
$4,000 per month
$2,000 per month

Which of these figures seem TOTALLY OUT OF WACK with the norm in America? Totally out of wack with your life and the life of your family?

How many people do you know can even SPEND $40,000 in 1 month????????????

Raising taxes 3% on family in example 1 making $40,000 in 1 month is unfair to them how??? Please explain to me what sacrifices they will be making????

Meanwhile the people in example 2 and 3 are most likely forced to buy health insurance plans that can be at least $500 or more per month.

Maybe my numbers are off or I just don't get it, but I really do not see the problem in "taxing the rich" to pay for healthcare for the rest of us.

3. But we have no fear of taxing the uninsured.
Let's be clear, the majority of the cost of this bill will be paid by a massive, new tax on the uninsured that equals 12% of gross income. Someone tell me how that is a good idea.

The uninsured are the people who can't afford to pay new taxes now. Heck, if I could afford that, I would have purchased insurance already.

This bill does many good things, I admit, but a new, whopping, 12%-of-gross tax on the uninsured makes no sense, will cause massive resentment, and is likely to drive people away from the Democratic Party in droves.

I would rather Congress do nothing than to pass this bill.

Also, keep in mind that post withholding/taxes those families with $2000-4000 a month are really only bringing home about 60%-70% of that, and less if they have insurance.

It's a rigged game. People with money also tend to get better interest rates on their credit and purchases, and sometimes even cheaper prices. Then again, there are a lot of rich people out there who have no clue how to make their income stretch because they think that $100 is cheap for a pair of jeans....

6. If the rich paid their employees enough for them to buy good insurance
Edited on Thu Jul-16-09 02:36 PM by juno jones
in the first place, we wouldn't be in this mess.

But then they couldn't wallow in $40,000 grand a month. As it is they already have to save up a couple of months for a Louis Vuitton handbag. They've sacrificed and worked soooooooo hard for it.

Poor people need to get their priorities straight.

7. but golly gee, if they can't keep that 3%, the rich will eliminate all jobs!!
as if the rich would let anything stop them from their relentless pursuit of even more money, they claim that any iota of a tax increase on them would change their minds about investing and opening businesses and hiring and all that.

they already kill jobs here because it's cheaper to outsource, what makes anyone believe a higher or a lower tax rate would change that?
