http://feeds.gawker.com/~r/gizmodo/full/~3/oN2YO-nikGM/smartswipe-usb-credit-card-reader-comes-to-us-shopaholics

Previously only available in Canada, the SmartSwipe credit card reader is now available to US online shopaholics. The device plugs into any USB port and allows the user to securely swipe their card to make purchases.

"Until now, there hasn't been an affordable and effective solution for consumers to securely protect
their credit card data while shopping online" said Daniel McCann, President of NetSecure
Technologies. "Hackers have extremely sophisticated methods of circumventing traditional internet
security to steal your personal information right from your computer. SmartSwipe facilitates
transactions that leave no trace of credit card data, guaranteeing your information remains secure.

If it's worth it for you to have a little added security and the ability to bypass typing in your credit card number, the SmartSwipe is available now for $100 CAD ($87)....

1. What is the point? You don't have to pay for cc charges that aren't yours.
?? What am I missing here - why is anyone willing to pay $87 for this?

2. My guess is that banks are trying to figure out how they can stop entered number charges.
Reducing the number of charges made manually over the phone (typing or saying the number) or computer (typing the number) will reduce fraud. POS purchase already record "card present" when it's swiped rather than entered manually and some places are not permitted to enter numbers manually. Without a swipe, the customer can claim he didn't make the purchase.

4. Ah, right - shift the cost to the consumer even though the consumer is never liable, regardless.
:D Gotta love these banksters - they are so shrewd.
