Total Solar Eclipse
I was curious where the line of totality would track during the upcoming total solar eclipse on July 22. I've always wanted to see a total solar eclipse in person and wondered if it came anywhere into N. America. I was saddened to find that this one is tracking from west of India into the equatorial Pacific Ocean. So much for that.

Annular Solar Eclipse
But while I was at the http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse.html">NASA eclipse site I decided to look to see when the next eclipse would track through N. America, and hopefully even Texas. And, boy, was I surprised! Unfortunately, we have a few years yet to go before we get to see a total eclipse. But when we do, it's going to be a doozy! On August 21, http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2017Aug21Tgoogle.html">2017, we'll be witness to a total solar eclipse that will transverse the nation from Columbia, SC, all the way to Oregon. This one will be spectacular, with the point of Greatest Elcipse at Nashville, TN!

But, way sooner than that, some of us will get to see an http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse#Types">annular eclipse in 2012 that begins around Lubbock, Tx and goes to N. California. Should be worth the road trip for anyone not in the tracking areas.

Finally, a one-two combo in the first half of the '20s, including an http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_eclipse#Types">annular eclipse in http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2023Oct14Agoogle.html">2023 that will track from S. Texas to Oregon. And then just six months later, we will get a total eclipse in April of http://eclipse.gsfc.nasa.gov/SEgoogle/SEgoogle2001/SE2024Apr08Tgoogle.html">2024, which tracks directly over my town, from Del Rio, TX all the way to Maine and tracks inside the U.S. the whole way!

Very cool! I can't wait! Here's the tracking plot for the 2024 eclipse.

2. Solar eclipses scared the hell out of me when I was a kid.
All the teachers seem to stress about it was that you'd go blind if you looked directly at it.

I've updated my OP to reflect this:

The elcipse of 2012 - Begins near Lubbock and goes through N. California. This is an annular eclipse.

But, even sooner than the one in my OP is this one:

The eclipse of 2017 - Begins in Columbia, SC, and crosses the ENTIRE U.S. to Oregon.

Now I feel silly. TWO total and TWO annular (almost total) eclipses in the U.S. between now and 2024. That's really cool.

10. May 30th, 1984...
In Illinois, almost a total eclipse. It was lunchtime and my dad was having a quadruple bypass. I went outside to see it. the coolest part for me was I was sitting under a tree, and I looked down at the shadows cast by the leaves, and they were all ellipses(eliptical). It looked cloudy out, but there wasn't a cloud in the sky. I put out crystals and lucky stones to bathe in the light (OK, it was the 80's afterall). It was a very surreal moment with my dad in surgery. He got through it and lived many more years.

The world ends in 2012, so it's a moot point.

18. In '72 I was living on a farm in Nova Scotia, when there was a total eclipse.
The point of complete eclipse was about 10 miles from our farm. It defies description, truly. All of our animals went crazy. There was a 360 degree 'sunset' on the horizon. I did steal quick direct looks at the sun. (It's good to be forewarned because it's so incredibly beautiful that you don't want to take your eyes away.) Looked exactly like the picture on the left in your OP. Thanks for the news!
