Sen. Ricky Ricardo?

Sen. Tom Coburn evoked a 1950s TV show in a quip responding to Sonia Sotomayor’s scenario about what he might do if she -- hypothetically, of course -- attacked him.

"You'll have a lot of 'splainin' to do," Coburn said, to laughter from the crowd and Sotomayor. What he said -- and how he said it -- was a riff on a Hispanic television character, Ricky Ricardo, whose accent is now widely considered a broad parody.

In the famous 1950s TV show "I Love Lucy," the Cuban-American bandleader Ricardo (played by the equally Cuban-American bandleader Desi Arnaz) would often admonish his scatterbrained wife, Lucy, by saying she'd have some "'splainin'" to do. The phrase, "Lucy, you have some 'splainin' to do," has become part of the popular culture.

4. These hearings provide a series of good quotes to collect to use when Repubs claim racism is not a
factor any more. If we can have US Senators making these sorts of comments on camera, it's still a major problem.

It turns my stomach.

..... After I returned from a vacation in the Dominican Republic, his priceless quote was: "I bet they had really good Mexican food there."

Since they make little jokes with their minions like this all the time, they think they're funny.

They just don't get it. They're dinosaurs!

12. C-SPAN occasionally has Dr. Splaine on...
Edited on Wed Jul-15-09 12:31 PM by immoderate
He's a U of Maryland professor who is an educational consultant. I always thought "Dr. Splaine" was a great name for a professor. :)

I sometimes use the expression in the classroom -- adult students who are very diverse. You gotta love Ricky Ricardo. As for Coburn, he's an asshole, but I would give him a pass on this one. It's funny.

Edit to add: Coburn was reacting to Sotomayor saying, "If I go home and get a gun, and come back and shoot you..." so this was a light moment, and she laughed at the comment.

19. Only if she had red hair -- and if he were Cuban. But he's not Cuban, just racist.
And ole Coburn is from up the road in Oklahoma -- or as I call it, Ocasino (guess why many Texans go up there with cash and come back broke).

21. No doubt the Liberal Media at ABC, NBC and CBS will devote 15 full minutes to it
They will no doubt explore the underlying racism and explore Coburns past bigoted comments, right? Because the media has a liberal bias, right?

Right?
