Mods are no longer needed at DU
Dr. Richard Daystrom has designed a new automated computer system, the M5 Multitronic Moderations system--a thinking, learning computer system that can handle the entire moderation duties all by itself. Nothing can possibly go worng.

4. Turning things over to the machines doesn't usually work out in the movies
But maybe in real life it will be great.

8. I used to visit a forum which used some sort of filter
to replace certain words with asterisks. The algorithm was quite humorous. Say a poster wrote, "I'm really peeved with the Bush administration." The result was "I'm really ***ved with the Bush administration."

You get the idea. It made for a very interesting read on many posts. The admins wouldn't get rid of it, despite its poor performance.

So, how many ***** are used in a typical baseball game, do you think?

9. Lots of forums do that. That's where things like "pron", "@ss", and the like come from.

12. Yes, those same programs won't let you contract phrases like "he will" or "who are"
I think that's more for chat boards, tho.

11. Listen, and understand
The mod is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are tombstoned.
