Sotomayor's "friends" around the world
Tue Jul 14, 9:42 pm ET

Most of the buzz around Sotomayor is in the United States. Not surprisingly, she also has plenty of "friends" in Puerto Rico and elsewhere in Latin America.

Several pages dedicated to her confirmation have sprouted up on Facebook, and people from around the planet are joining. One page, "Confirm Sotomayor," had more than 24,300 fans as of midday Tuesday.

Some of the countries represented: Antigua, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada (loads), Colombia, Cuba, Denmark, Dominican Republic, France, Ghana, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Panama and Thailand.

Another popular Facebook page, "I Stand With Sotomayor," is peppered with wall posts from non-Americans.

2. Democrats will vote for her anyway and Republicans seem hostile to other nations. Heck, many of
them are hostile to anyone but WASP Republican Amurricans.

3. Isn't it abnormal to feel vicious toward people elsewhere who celebrate this nomination?
I doubt you'll ever find a Democrat who would have any interest at all in taking a kick at Sotomayor. How unbelievably odd.

The hostility revealed in sneering "who cares what they think" has only been voiced by people like the most disliked U.S. President in history, George W. Bush.

8. weren't the people who were saying "Clinton embarrassed the U.S. in the world's eyes"
all for a true embarrassment in the White House 1/20/2001-1/20/2009?

5. I feel neutral about other nations approval regarding Supreme Court
nominees. For one thing the office has nothing to do with foreign policy or the state dept. so it really kind of is none of their business. Just as their judicial appointments are none of our business.

For Justice S.'s moral support, I think its great.

There is no hostility involved. However I don't think I ever would want another nation to have any influence on our judicial system. Look at the Sharia law practiced in some Western European countries outside their national judicial systems and not prosecuted-- it boggles my mind.

6. It would be a relief the world could live with if WE butted out of other countries' business.
Without any doubt at all reporters went to these people whose opinions were discussed and ASKED THEM what they thought about the new nominee.

Do you imagine they made it their business to contact the US and offer their views on this event? Hell, no.

They answered the questions they were asked by reporters. If they had declined to answer, the reporters no doubt would have gleefully written their stories about "furriners" who won't discuss Sotomayor, then clowns here would start getting surly and resentful about that.

They didn't call us with their opinions. The reporters asked THEM. What should they have answered in order to escape simmering hostility from certain elements in this country?

7. Reporters certainly must be hard up to look to "create news"
maybe they should cover the war or the economy or healthcare -- stuff that is important to their readership/viewership.
