Only compaint about unrec
If you are going to unrec a thread...you should say why you unreced it.

Honestly as someone who does an OP if you don't like my opinion, I want to know why or where my flaw in logic lies.

1. My biggest complaint is the 'un' should be a seperate count
When I see a post with <0 I would like to know how many negative rec's its gotten.

4. Nor do I
Anything with two sentences does not belong on the greatest.

5. And so am I.
I'm amazed that people actually think these kind of personal threads should ever get a recommendation. Most are like this one. No caloric value to the reader.

Quality posts have gotten resounding support all day, starting with Swanson's thread. This system works great, because it does stop these mouth-breathing threads dead in their tracks.

6. I post more substance than this usually
Sometimes people like it sometimes they hate it. If you hate it. Let me know why.

14. I've already told you. It's weak, unmeritorious, and lame.
Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 08:41 PM by TexasObserver
And I can't believe you think it's anything more than a bad thread that is a waste of time.

17. I unrecommend any thread I don't think deserves recommending.
There are many reasons I find a thread unrecommended.

If it's about pets, freepers, Palin, how unfair unrecommend is, I unrecommend it.

It it's some whine or rant, I unrecommend.

If it's poorly written, if it has no substance, if it's boring, if it's just plain worthless, I unrecommend it.

Most threads here deserve to be unrecommended. Those that are quality, that are relevant, that are useful, I recommend.

21. So these are the only two alternatives?
The way the RWers who see the world in black and white?

You can read something and not R or U. Most threads have never made it to the greatest page where you need at least 5 R.

I agree with the OP.

10. Or, you know...it's just the internet and the terms "coward" and "noble" don't really apply that
Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 08:33 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
well as sitting at a computer posting on an internet messageboard is so common and takes so little effort that it really shouldn't get the glory and attention those words imply.

12. Well, the words "cowards" and "noble" are usually reserved for people who *do* something.
Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 08:38 PM by SemiCharmedQuark
Rather than just not *type* something.

I took your exclamation and curses of these non-commentors to mean the issue was rather important to you.

8. The "feature" is laden with usability issues...
Edited on Mon Jul-13-09 08:31 PM by targetpractice
Your idea is a good one... I think it should be a requirement to post a comment in a thread that you are "unrecommending" or perhaps "recommending" as well.

There are a bunch of usability issues with the "unrecommend" feature, and I plan to write a longer post in the future. But, here's what I wrote in my own lounge post about the TV show "Kings" after I got a hit-and-run unrecommendation...

I simply started a thread about a show that is discussed often in the DU Lounge... Seems sort of mean-spirited for someone to unrecommend the thread without posting feedback.

The "unrecommend" option seems like an ill-conceived feature to me. I'm a product manager and usability consultant... So, I speak with some expertise...

First, "unrecommend" isn't even a real word... If the admins were looking looking for a label that means the opposite of the verb "recommend" they might try "suppress" or "disparage" instead. However, those concepts are too negative... Yet, that's exactly the nature of the "feature." Watering down the label doesn't wash away the nastiness of the functionality.

Anyways... My feelings are hurt after getting my first "unrecommendation" because I don't know why I deserve it. Does someone not like Kings, the latest episode, my post, or me? I can't tell because of the complete lack of useful information conveyed by an anonymous "unrecommendation."

I've been meaning to write a long post about this... but was too lazy... Maybe I will now that I've been stung.

...is the comeback delivered many times over the last few day.

16. I think the problem with that is, when you post in a thread, you "bump" it
people bent on pushing a thread off of the greatest page will not want to counter that by "bumping" that thread with a reply saying why, which may then spark other replies to that one... etc.

18. I'd like to see the number of recs required for the greatest page increased
to say 15 or 20. Five recs are too few and previously I often saw merely 'feel good' posts that made people say 'right on' but otherwise had little interesting information make it to the greatest page. I would say if 15 or 20 people recommend a post, no matter how many unrecommend it, it should meet the threshold for support in this community, justifying its listing on the greatest page. That would require two running totals, for and against. The way it is now, if 100 people recommend a post but if 96 unrecommend it, it won't get any special standing, despite the fact that it is probably a very thought-provoking although controversial post.
