1. He's insulted everyone, hasn't he?
Or at least one of his cronies has.

I think the corporate media passes that off as "charm." :eyes:

95. Yes.
I came into this Imus story late, and I still don't get the hoopla. Apparently the wrong person was listening to his show at the wrong time or something, because "nappy headed ho's" is gentle compared to some of the things he says on his show. He's insulted Jews, and "Jesus freaks," and "faggots," and the Irish, and the Catholics, and the Hispanics, etc. He insults everyone. I can *maybe* see why it was a problem, but this is like the headline story EVERYWHERE. I'm sorry, but there are worse things going on in this world than what he said, and if you are offended at what he said, everyone should have been in an uproar long before that comment.

I just don't get it. He is somewhere in between a legitimate news show, and a comedy news show. The Daily Show makes comments like that when they do their spoof news bits, and no one complains about them. Like I said, I just don't get it. I only assume that everyone thinks that he is a racist and it was some form of what Michael Richards or Mel Gibson did, in which case, again I say, those people that think that must not watch him much.

With everything else going on in the world, it's just sad that this is what the news is covering now almost 24/7.

2. Yes.
It would depend on exactly what he said.

If he had used the n-word to describe those female basketball players, he'd be gone.

If he were to use the word "kike" to describe a Jew, he'd be gone.

If he were to say something else about Jews, maybe he'd stay, maybe he'd go.

not quite as grotesque as his comments the other day, but when he talks about the senior Jewish staff at MSNBC or anywhere else, one of the adjectives often used is 'cheap'. Other allusions abound.

I remember him from his live Atlantic City shows on the Boardwalk for WNBC in the 70's. He's NFG.

4. Oh, he's already DONE that. He called his bosses "Money grubbing Jews"
Fairly recently, too, late last year. Ho hum...it's what he does, you see. It's his "schtick." He feeds on the outrage when he goes over the line. The worst you could do to him is ignore his skinny old ass.

http://www.forward.com/articles/imus-cbs-bosses-money-grubbing-jews/

Hot on the heels of Mel Gibson and Michael Richards, radio personality Don Imus let loose with his own barrage of antisemitic vitriol on the November 30 broadcast....That morning, the program, which is produced in New York by WFAN and simulcast on MSNBC, was going to host a group of gospel singers known as the Blind Boys of Alabama. In anticipation of their appearance, Imus recalled reservations voiced by station supervisors prior to an earlier appearance by the group.

“I remember when I first had ’em on a few years ago,” Imus said. “The Jewish management at, whoever we work for, CBS, were bitchin’ at me about it.” WFAN is a subsidiary of WCBS radio.

“We had a meeting in my office,” Imus continued. “They were furious, but of course I don’t care what they say and never have.”.....the show’s executive producer, Bernard McGuirk, a regular on-air presence, said of the Blind Boys, “Even if you wear a beanie, how can you not love these guys?”

“I tried to put it in terms that these money-grubbing bastards could understand,” Imus replied. “I said: ‘They’re handicapped, they’re black and they’re blind. How do we lose here?’ And then a light bulb went off over their scummy little heads.”

Imus co-host Larry Kenney, an impressionist who appeared earlier in the program as the Rev. Jerry Falwell, then said: “They probably were trying to push a more Semitic group on you. I don’t know, maybe the Paralyzed Putzes of Poland, or something like that.”

“You can’t believe what goes on behind the scenes, at least with me with these people,” Imus said. “And fortunately, I don’t care.”

That Jews have power and blacks don't? That TPTB dance to the tune of the Jews?

And on Easter Sunday, too. Ah, I remember my grandmother's stories of the Easter pogroms.

10. Well, settle down and don't worry about intent, because Imus already HAS insulted Jews.
Quite viciously, too--details posted elsewhere in this thread.

He insults everyone. It's rude, it's jerky, and it isn't amusing. It's what fellahs with small dicks do, to make themselves feel more important, "some say."

Hey, he's an asshole. No big surprise.

For the life of me I can't get exorcised over these binary constructs. "If it was X, instead of Y, do you think that people would be angry???" If it's OK for the goose, but not OK for the gander, that says terrible things about the people giving the goose a pass, no matter who they are--management, listeners, enabling subordinates.

Either someone is a shithead, or they aren't. If you're mean to people, you're MEAN. Imus, well, he's a mean shithead. He makes his living being one.

Now, as far as the OP, who knows what the inference was? That CBS upper management has a few Jewish people in it? That Dan Abrams is Jewish, and the program boss at MSNBC? I honestly don't know who owns WFAN, they also own a chunk of the Imus franchise. Anyway, my point is that Jews certainly didn't get a pass from that loudmouth.

He has insulted Jews in the past. And Blacks. And women. And just about everyone. It's what he does. Vote with your finger-change the station.

MY inference, and it isn't vicious, is that two wrongs NEVER make a right.

If it's not OK to be mean to one group, it's not OK to be mean to another group.

18. I think you're misreading my tone. Damn these keyboards, anyway!
My points are simply that the guy is a jerk, he's mean to everyone, and it is just as hideous when he is mean to Jews as when he's mean to Black females, or Chinese males, or anyone, for that matter.

It doesn't matter who he is mean to -- when he pulls that demeaning, insulting shit, it's wrong. It's not "more wrong" if it is directed at Black women, or "less wrong" if it's directed at Jews. It's just wrong.

And the only person who is really demeaned by that language is the guy spouting it.

Usually when I talk to someone I find I can tell a lot more about the tone of their voice and how they say something than by what they actually say.

Its not a problem and I do understand.

But by the way, I was wrong. Take care and see you later.

14. "jews have power"? - per Harvard study of ethnic group earnings in New England - NO - they don't
indeed of the dozen groups identified of reasonable sized populations, the bottom was black, then brown, then Jew, the rest of the population were making more on average as a group.

Easter pogroms may be no more, thank goodness, but bias taking down earnings is still around.

We elected a black as gov in Mass so maybe things are changing - I hope.

Edited on Sun Apr-08-07 10:33 PM by papau
pull it up from back them;

The Boston metro area (? - it may have been Boston only, or even the 5 state NE region - my memory fails me a bit) salaries where like 6000 for blacks, 7000 for Hispanic, 8000 for Jewish folk, the 8500 to 11000 for a dozen nationalities amongst whites, with the Greek Major Restaurant owners bringing the Greek average up to a little above 11,000.

Since that time recent Harvard studies have shown that the opening of the university admissions to more Jews has made the nationwide average for Jews move into the high 40's/low 50's compared to a US wide average for everyone of 47,000 (household income, US census)

1) used standard stereotypic language about Jews being severely flawed, substandard beings,

2) in unambivalent language,

3) and it got the same media coverage that his comments of the Rutgers Women's Basketball Team got,

then yeah, I could even imagine Imus' bud, Joe Lieberman, making a resolution in the Senate, voice quivering, that would publicly condemn Imus.

Imus wouldn't be fired outright, but his rating would have a major hit, and he'd be "replaced" because of the ratings, not the statements.

17. Controversy = Ratings = $$$$$
This is one of the oldest tricks in the book...you want your show to get noticed? Say something to offend someone. Shock 'em, piss 'em off, turn 'em on...get 'em paying attention. As the scene in Private Parts best showed it...Stern is threatened with being tossed off the Washington station until the sales moron walks in with the ratings...all is forgotten and forgiven.

Anus "targets" his show to 25-54 males...originating from a testosterone-laden radio station where racism is modus operandi. At one time I worked with a sports-talk station and the level of sexism and bigotry was intense. Women were second class, blacks were only good for how fast they ran the 40 (and add extra ridicule if they had a name that wasn't a "christian" one) and don't even get into gays or foreigners.

As I said the other day...a good chance Anus' bosses probably gave him a bonus for all the PR he's generating.

33. I know.
According to your post count, I see you're fairly new here. That means you must have missed the Lebanon/Israel war threads here on DU last summer. If you think this thread is bad, you should have been here for the Lebanon/Israel threads. You're fortunate that you missed them. "Zionists" (which, on DU, are different than "regular Jews") are detested here and Anti-Semitism isn't hatred toward Jews because Arabs are Semites too and if you speak hatred toward "Zionists" it's not hatred toward "regular Jews." It's all just hatred toward the "Zionist Government" in Israel. Oh ya, AIPAC (Jewish organization) controls our Government too. Some people have even said that Israel shouldn't exist. Just be warned. Wear a thick skin before you log in.

DU does have a Israel/Palestinian forum if you care to get a taste of how some here think. Link to that forum:

67. there are an awful lot of assumptions being made here- you are
projecting your own hatred imho

I would be equally as angry if Imus had just made a similarly offensive comment about people of the Jewish faith. I would be among those calling for his removal-

I happen to believe there wouldn't be much of a problem having him removed if this were the situation.

NOT because (as has been spoken here by those who claim to have a sensitivity to the issue):
"Jews own the media"-
but because there is more visceral outrage when people of the Jewish faith are verbally abused in similar ways.

His comments were 'over the top'- But over the top about a group of people that do NOT have sincere EQUALITY in this country- people who DO NOT have 'equal protection under the law'-(despite what may be 'claimed') There is a LOT of history- history more recent than the Holocaust, which people of color continue to struggle against.

Do you think "Katrina" would have been tolerated???- the piss-poor response, the criminal lack of support of the victims of a terrible government blunder that STILL disrupts the future of many NOLA families??? Do you honestly think this would have happened, would have been ALLOWED- if the majority of the people involved had had 'white skin' and not 'brown'??

I sure as hell don't- And that is a sick, disgusting, shameful FACT.

peace,
blu

I went and tried to read the link you provided, but I get a "page not found" message.

From the clip you were kind enough to post, I don't get a clear picture of what you are trying to point out.

I have to say, I wouldn't listen to Imus if I was paid to- but his comment about the "nappy headed 'ho's" was as flat out racist, and despicible as they come.

'ho is = to 'cunt' in my dialect. Both are words you'll lose my respect for using when refering to human beings. And you'll have to endure my lecture of why the words are not acceptable.-

If he's slandered people of the Jewish faith and gone on to add to the racist bigotry by using similar demeaning sexual slurs defaming their character, please help me learn when and how he did this- I'll be happy write and add this to my request that he be taken off the air.

This statement of his was WAY over the line-

83. Sure
You said, "I would be equally as angry if Imus had just made a similarly offensive comment about people of the Jewish faith. I would be among those calling for his removal- I happen to believe there wouldn't be much of a problem having him removed if this were the situation."

That's just not true. Imus has made offensive anti-Semitic remarks on numerous occasions, and the Anti-Defamation League wrote him numerous letters decrying these remarks. Nevertheless, he stayed on & was not removed. Your post contained a flawed assumption - that Imus would be removed if his slur had been directed against Jews. But he has made slurs against Jews in the past, w/o any negative effect on his career. There's at least an implicit implication here, that you & the OP may not have intended, that Jews control the media & would therefore get Imus fired if he made an anti-Semitic remark. Well, they're not & he wasn't. Imus is just a hateful, hateful person who seems to be bullet-proof from any consequences for his numerous bigoted & misogynistic remarks.

86. I appreciate your answering- and
I agree that Imus should have been brought up short before this.

I don't agree that the degree of the offensiveness is the same, but that doesn't excuse his remarks, or make them any less hurtful.

I guess the best way to say this is in plain english-

My understanding of the word he used twice, going beyond the words that slurred the appearance of the Rutgers women the word-"HO"-

I know to mean:

ho
1. A hooker or a hoochie, although sometimes more promiscuous than a hoochie, and therefore undesirable. "Yo G, look at that ho!"

hoochie
1. n. A female who is promiscuous by nature. A female who grants sexual favors easy. *See also "hooch" or "hoochie mama." "Let's go mack on them hoochies over there."

http://www.thesource4ym.com/teenlingo/index.asp?Letter=H

there is another citation here:

http://wordnavigator.com/word/ho/

This ramps the whole thing up a notch imo.

I don't excuse his hateful remarks uttered earlier- I DO believe the remarks he made, the words this post was addressing, stepped way over any kind of acceptable speech.

As for the notion that "the Jews control the media"- I don't belive that was implied or intended by this post- And people who make stupid statements like that should be confronted, and corrected. - I do belive Imus understood full well the meaning of the words he was using, and used them without conscience.

thank you for helping me understand where you are coming from.

It will be a wonderful day, when conversations such as this don't have to happen.

32. Imus insults everyone: blacks, Jews, fat people, ugly people,
Middle Eastern people, Latinos, gays . . . you name it. He refers to his own wife as the "Green Ho" because of her cleaning products. It's his schtick being a nastier, uglier, dried up version of Don Rickles. On a positive note, he doesn't spare Bush and never hesitates to call him a war criminal. Sometimes I like him, sometimes I hate him, most of the time I don't care one way or the other.

34. He can do that in the same breath, he hates anti-Semites, jews, blacks etc.
On the February 2 edition of MSNBC's Imus in the Morning,
the show's executive producer, Bernard McGuirk, claimed that
Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has "a Jew-hating name."

The remark followed a flurry of other negative comments
from host Don Imus, McGuirk, and co-host Charles McCord
about the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate, calling Obama a
"creep," "a wind-watching wimp," and "a flip-flopping weasel."

Imus initially agreed with McGuirk's "Jew-hating" comment
with a "es," but then said: "Well, that's a little far, don't you think?"
to which McGuirk responded: "Yeah, probably."

As Media Matters for America has noted, in 2006,
Imus referred to the "Jewish management" of CBS Radio as
"money-grubbing bastards."

43. Apparently not
I don't know why anybody around here defends him. I've never gotten to listen to his show since I don't live on the east coast and I'm not up early enough to watch him on MSNBC. However, the line that "he rips on everybody", which is also used to justify some of the missteps made by South Park (which believe you me is plenty popular in my part of the country) is wearing really thin. "Ripping on everybody" with ethnically-charged rhetoric doesn't make a man fair, it just makes him a hater...

I had assumed that the same American Jewish groups who had correctly condemned Mel Gibson for his antisemitic tirade would have certainly condemned Imus had he done something similar on his show.

I had not read of any condemnation from these groups toward Imus before nor was I aware Imus had already made antisemitic comments until now.

Hope that clarifies that for you?

If enough people read what you write it is a certainty that someone is going to misunderstand what you write.

I've been online since the days of Atari computers and 300 baud acoustic modems and I have long since realized that a lot of people do not read what is written but what they think is written.

With Imus and MSNBC, It’s Offend, Apologize, Repeat

http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?ID=346891&Category=20&subCategoryID=

<snip>This is not the first time MSNBC has had to apologize for comments made by Imus on its air, not by a mile. Which explains why various organizations were pretty dismissive of Friday’s apologies.

Media watchdog group Media Matters of America noted the comments are “just the latest in a long history of racial slurs made on the show by Imus, his guests, and regular contributors.”

Among the highlights from the MSNBC We Apologize for Don Imus’s Show Which Is Not Our Production Hall of Fame:

In January 2006, Imus chatted with Chris Matthews on his radio show, simulcast on MSNBC, and discussed unprintable candy metaphors by way of describing the relationship of the male leads in the flick “Brokeback Mountain.” MSNBC apologized for that one, too, saying, according to a report by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation:

” ’Imus’ is produced by WFAN radio and is simulcast by MSNBC. The views expressed on the program are not those of MSNBC. Having said that, it was unfortunate that these remarks were telecast on MSNBC. We sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by these remarks.”

Traveling further back, in December ’04, MSNBC apologized for comments made on “Imus in the Morning” in which Palestinians were referred to as “stinking animals” and a suggestion was made that they all be killed.

Any other questions?

Don

I posted my opinion on why I think you started this thread. On April 7 you post an article about Imus insulting Gays, African Americans and Palestinians (link above) and on April 8 you start this thread because you thought his bosses were Jewish and accepted the bigoted slurs against AA, Gays and Palestinians, only to learn they too had been slurred by the bigot. Your whole theory exploded.

Imus Offends With Anti-Jewish Remarks -

Dear Mr. Imus,

We were greatly disturbed by your November 30 broadcast of "Imus in the Morning" where you and your co-hosts unctuously referred to the "Jewish management at whoever we work for, CBS" whom you later referred to as "money grubbing bastards," a classical anti-Semitic epithet.

The entire discussion between you and your co-hosts was deeply offensive, resulting in a barrage of phone calls, letters and e-mails to us from other listeners and viewers who were as offended as we.

While we try to give some latitude to your brand of entertainment and understand that you are an "equal opportunity offender," this kind of unvarnished Jew-baiting clearly crosses the line from shock radio into anti-Semitism.

Imus Remark Deeply Troubling -

Dear Mr. Imus:

We were troubled by your remark on the December 15 edition of Imus in the Morning and Imus On MSNBC, where you referred to the publishers of a new book called "The Christmas Thief" as "thieving Jews," and your subsequent "apology" on the same program, where you said (of thieving Jews), "I apologize … I realize that's redundant." ....

So apparently there is a sliding scale of who may and may not be offended without impunity.

70. Not true. Imus has used Jewish slurs repeatedly:
Shortly before Christmas last year, syndicated radio star and MSNBC host Don Imus called the book publishers Simon & Schuster “thieving Jews” (Imus in the Morning, 12/15/04), returning to the subject later in the program to offer a mock apology, saying that the phrase he used was “redundant.”

Anti-Semitism is nothing new on Imus’ show, which is notorious for its ethnic and sexual slurs. In 1998, for instance, Imus called Washington Post media writer Howard Kurtz “that boner-nosed . . . beanie-wearing little Jew boy” (Newsday, 10/19/98).

When Anti-Defamation League director Abe Foxman complained about Imus’ Simon & Schuster slur, describing it in a letter (12/20/04) as “an age-old anti-Semitic canard that still, unfortunately, has great currency today,” Imus was defiant. “I wrote a two-word response across the face of ,” Imus told listeners (1/4/05), “and sent it back to them.” Besides a handful of mentions in tabloid newspapers (New York Post, 1/5/05; Boston Herald, 1/7/05) and a short UPI report (1/5/05), the Imus affair received next to no coverage.

The reality that a very sinister and deadly racial prejudice against African Americans- and other People of Color is very much still alive in this country, cannot be denied or excused.

I do not in any way condone Imus' Jewish slurs- they are unacceptable. It isn't 'freedom of speech' when it violates another persons right' to "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness".

There is no question he has done that- and he should not be paid to continue doing so.

87. Why did you pick that particular group out of all the ethnic,
religious and nationality groups, literally hundreds of them, on this planet?

88. Because I had never heard him use it so I assumed he hadn't
But he had.

89. He always struck me as an equal opportunity bigot
which is why the last time I ever listened to him was probably about three or more years ago. Besides, he was boring even then.

90. Because the OP is implying that, since he believes the Jews own the media,
that Imus's bosses (who must be Jews themselves) would have fired him outright if he insulted a Jew.

Now the OP is going to backtrack and object saying stuff like "I didn't mean it that way..." or "I'm misunderstood..." or "my words are taken out of context..." In other words, sort of the same thing Imus is saying now about his bigoted remark regarding the Rutger basketball team.

Weird how the world comes around in a full circle like that, huh?

92. You don't know what the hell you're talking about.
You have nothing on this poster other than a misguided sense of self-righteousness.

91. Isn't Imus jewish himself?
And I'm sure he has. He offends every group there is, including his wife.

93. What ever gave you the idea he is Jewish?
He is very openly Christian.

94. I wasn't trying to guess, I thought I read it somewhere.
I guess I was mistaken. I don't watch or listen to his show but I am sure he has offended the jewish people also.
