Sanford admits more encounters with Argentine mistress (Also lied to wife, said he broke up w/ her)
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford is admitting more encounters with his Argentine mistress than he previously has disclosed, the Associated Press reports.

The Republican governor, in what the AP calls a "lengthy, emotional interview," describes seven meetings with the woman, including their first in 2001.

Sanford says there have been five over a 12-month period, including two multi-night stays with her in New York.

It is his first disclosure of any encounters with her in the United States and contradicts a public confession last week during which he admitted to a total of four get-togethers in the past year.

Sanford acknowledged the affair after disappearing for five days last week and deceiving his wife and staff as to his whereabouts.

Update at 12:40 p.m. ET: In the AP interview, Sanford says that a meeting earlier this year in Manhattan with his mistress, Maria Bele Chapur, was meant to be a farewell meeting after his wife had found out about the affair.

He claims that he had his wife's permission to break off the affair in person and was accompanied by a “trusted spiritual adviser” serving as chaperone. The three went to church and dinner together and parted ways the same night, he tells the AP.

However, he resumed the affair earlier this month in a trip to Argentina that brought the affair to light.

Cheating on your wife, I can see how that's hypocrisy when it comes to "family values", but lying... I think that's pretty standard operating procedure for a Republican.

16. He said he'd known her for 8yrs, but just as a friend,
and that the affair didn't start until last year. Of course, he's lied about everything else, so why believe him on this?

4. The more he tries to portray himself as the good guy in this
the more people will be thoroughly disgusted with him.

Of course, he's sincere in wanting to think he's far above the average male who follows his dick out of a marriage. After all, his mistress was a hot Latina and he had to travel a hemisphere away to see her. The expense alone should sanctify the whole thing.

I just wish the reporters would ease off the salacious aspects and focus more on the abandonment off the office and the misuse of taxpayer money.

Still, I don't see him able to deodorize this one at all. His days are numbered and the only person in the world who doesn't see that is Sanford.

8. i do not care about his infidelities.
he shouldn't resign, but it would be nice if he would come out and say his condemnation of Clinton was wrong & hypocritical.

he could be the one to move the GOP out of the corner it's painted itself into. wait, what am i saying? stay in the corner for eternity!

10. He SHOULD resign... He disappeared and no one knew where he was...

Isn't that "dereliction of duty?" He's the CEO and CinC of the state of SC. What if a disaster or emergency was facing SC? Where was the Gov? I read last week he never formally turned over authority to the Lt. Gov. What was the chain of command?

I don't care about his trysts, but his disappearing for several days without notifying anyone should be a concern for the residents of SC.

edited for clarity

9. "Farewell" meeting? Geez.. does he think he's 15?
Edited on Tue Jun-30-09 12:34 PM by SoCalDem
When the wife/husband "finds out", you CALL the person....with the wife/husband listening in, and you END it..by phone..and then you never see them again.

UNLESS

you have no intention of ending it at all, and you are just placating the wife/husband, so that once it all blows over, you can re-start things again.

Republicans can't even seem to figure out how to have an affair:)

They need to start reading more paperback romances:)

15. Also, why does want to give us all of this TMI?
He is only feeling guilty because he was caught. Who needs the sordid details of his affair? He's dragging his wife into more public humiliation. He's such an idiot anyway.
