Salmonella Scare Prompts Dairy Recall - Impact potentially far-reaching

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2009/06/salmonella_milk.html

Plainview Milk Products Cooperative, Plainview, Minn., is voluntarily recalling instant nonfat dried milk, whey protein, fruit stabilizers, and thickening agents that it has manufactured over the past two years, because they might be contaminated with Salmonella.

The company sells these products to other industry customers, including distributors and manufacturers, who may have incorporated them into their own products. None of Plainview's products were sold directly to the public.

"This recall is an appropriate precaution to protect public health," said David W.K. Acheson, M.D., associate commissioner for foods in the Food and Drug Administration. "It reflects the concerted efforts of numerous partners at the local, state, and federal levels."

During an investigation of the Plainview facility, FDA found that some of the equipment was contaminated with Salmonella. At this time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not linked any human illnesses to potentially contaminated products from the Plainview facility.

The FDA became aware of this problem through the U. S. Department of Agriculture. USDA found Salmonella in Dairyshake powder, in 100-gram pouches that were not for retail sale. The FDA began an investigation as to the source of the contamination.

Dairyshake powder? I knew extra milk was turned into a kind of curd and then reconstitued and called 'fresh' milk. but what is Dairyshake powder used for?

I stopped drinking milk a number of years ago because of the unhealthy stuff they put in it/plus what they now feed cows, plus it left a bad after taste.

1. "...manufactured over the past two years"
Two years? Wow. Getting so you can't trust your food anymore.

2. The meat recall is a large window too.
Like so long that I am wondering how long it is that "fresh" meat can actually lay around before being sold, and how do they keep it from turning brown?

I like a good hamburger, but the yuck factor is replacing the yum factor.

4. The most recent one goes back to April, I think.
I've been saying that there's got to be a better way. I don't eat meat (or dairy) but damn, far too many folks do and this food has just got to be safer for them. Imagine contracting one of these illnesses and being one of the millions without health insurance? Double screwed by your own govt.

3. "but what is Dairy shake powder used for?"
Pretty sure it's a form of powdered milk made specifically for milk shakes. As opposed to non-dairy shakes, soy-based f'rinstance.
