Deepak Chopra's tribute to his friend, Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson will be remembered, most likely, as a shattered icon, a pop genius who wound up a mutant of fame. That's not who I will remember, however. His mixture of mystery, isolation, indulgence, overwhelming global fame, and personal loneliness was intimately known to me. For twenty years I observed every aspect, and as easy as it was to love Michael -- and to want to protect him -- his sudden death yesterday seemed almost fated.

Two days previously he had called me in an upbeat, excited mood. The voice message said, "I've got some really good news to share with you." He was writing a song about the environment, and he wanted me to help informally with the lyrics, as we had done several times before. When I tried to return his call, however, the number was disconnected. (Terminally spooked by his treatment in the press, he changed his phone number often.) So I never got to talk to him, and the music demo he sent me lies on my bedside table as a poignant symbol of an unfinished life.

When we first met, around 1988, I was struck by the combination of charisma and woundedness that surrounded Michael. He would be swarmed by crowds at an airport, perform an exhausting show for three hours, and then sit backstage afterward, as we did one night in Bucharest, drinking bottled water, glancing over some Sufi poetry as I walked into the room, and wanting to meditate.

1. No matter one's views on Jackson, it seems to me that Dr. Chopra is a model of friendship.

From everything I see and know about Chopra (from his books and the media), I'd value the kind of friendship he shows.

2. Sorry but I disagree.
I think Dr. Chopra is a con artist who probably screwed Jackson out of a lot of money. Chopra made millions preying on people's ignorance.

3. I'll agree on that
It's too bad Michael couldn't move his body to another quantum level of health.

6. "Sorry but..."
Edited on Mon Jun-29-09 06:53 PM by TahitiNut
Any post that begins with these two words is guaranteed to be false ... since "sorry" is the LAST thing the poster is feeling. Indeed, it signals arrogance, hypocrisy, antipathy, and a condescending attitude ... and, as such, is possibly one of the more annoying prefaces one might compose.

I personally regard such a use of the word "sorry" to be a borderline obscenity, demeaning true human sorrow and suffering by exploiting the word as a hypocritical rhetorical flourish.

It's a shame you obviously lack any familiarity with Dr. Chopra's works.

7. I made my statement because I am very familiar with the con artist.
If not for my knowledge. I would not have made the statement. BTW, your response was very crude. I will leave it at that.

14. It can't be hypocritical AND accurate. So, since it's my
reply post to oldman, I think Tahitinut's statement was accurate as well as articulate, thankyou.

12. Well, it's more that he revealed private information on national TV
I was uncomfortable with him saying MJ had asked him for an Oxycontine prescription. I think that is private info that Chopra should have only shared with his wife, if that. Loyalty means not betraying trusts unless their life is in danger. This was after he died. No good would come of it except Chopra being quoted a lot.

I do think meditation is healthy, AND it is free. Chopra always advised that, and it does not cost a penny. As for the other stuff, well, his center is more of a spa.

15. Chopra was one of the few to try and get Jackson into rehab
Can't you put your damn prejudice aside for two minutes and look at something from a different perspective?

13. Beautiful
"But when the shock subsides and a thousand public voices recount Michael's brilliant, joyous, embattled, enigmatic, bizarre trajectory, I hope the word "joyous" is the one that will rise from the ashes and shine as he once did."
