No Recession at Our Local Apple Computer Store
Times are tough in N. California. Stores and factories are closing and people are out of jobs. But if you walk by the local Apple computer store in San Francisco, you wouldn't know there is a recssion going on (unless you look across the street at the empty Virgin Records store). Every evening on my way home from work, I see people lined up outside to catch a glimpse of the IPhone 3GS or lower prices laptop computers. They are not just looking. I see a lot of people heading out the store with purchased items. I recently bought an iMac and iPhone and I admit that Apple makes damn good products. I guess either value is recession-proof, their buyers are not worried about the future, or both.

11. Apple never seems to have problems getting customers.
I was at Easton Town Center near Columbus the day before the debut of the latest iPhone. It was afternoon and people were already lining up in the sweltering heat to secure their place in line. The employees were handing out free bottles of water.

I thought they were nuts--you couldn't've paid me to stand in line that long, especially on such a hot day--but there you have it.

8. I've observed people texting. Most texters use devices with hardware keyboards integrated.
iPhones are great but the integrated soft keyboard is annoying and there's no stylus. It's the one time I'd rather have a hardware keyboard.

Having said that, iPhone's battery life and reception quality beats the shit out of every stock cell phone or Windows Mobile device I've ever used, hands down. Me happy.

6. LOL nope
I live several blocks form the Apple store in downtown SF and am always baffled by how crowded the store is during such a deep recession.

7. I was there a week ago. Jam frigging packed with people.
:party::party::party::party::party::party:

Apple makes good products.

Sometimes too stingy (the latest MBP is said to brick some Macbooks using high end drives Apple hasn't "certified", and they like to overtighten some screws to make memory upgrades more difficult than they ought to be), but I can't complain... I hate dicking with computers; I just want to use the bloody things. Apple does that right. (Hardware issues can be on any platform... OS/software issues are far more common on Winbloat than they are on Apple. Period.)

10. Apple Stores will fail!
The iPod will fail!

Apple is going out of business!

I've been reading doom and gloom about Apple since I switched and bought my first Mac Plus in 1985.

It's so damned refreshing to sit here on my Mac Pro looking at a gorgeous 30" monitor and read such nice words about Apple.

Think they'll still be around in 10 years?

:)

14. I like to think so; they've kept up amazingly well...
Heck, I used to be against the Intel crossover (a history of consumer electronics, the 680x0 series beat the shit out of Intel's 808x lineup...)

But I do know Intel has made amazing strides with their processors, especially in modern times, and the Gx series was very costly for Apple. With everything else on their plate, and seeing things from other perspectives than the cynical ones, they did the right thing.

I still miss the Motorola era, and if only IBM used the 68000 instead of the 8088 we'd be in a different reality today...
