NEW YORK — Bernard Madoff's wife says she feels "betrayed and confused" by the actions of her husband.

Ruth Madoff said in a statement Monday that "the man who committed his horrible fraud is not the man whom I have known for all these years."

Her 71-year-old husband was sentenced minutes earlier to 150 years in prison for fraud that bilked investors of billions of dollars.

A judge had already issued a forfeiture order stripping Ruth Madoff of $80 million in assets she claimed were hers. The order left her with $2.5 million.

9. My first reaction was that the statement was issued to protect the $2.5 million

Ruth might be the second coming of Mother Theresa, but I doubt it. The official "This is not the man I married" statement throws a protective fence around the cheddar and buys her some time before the spotlight is focused in her direction. As long as she can play the innocent victim, she (in her mind, and the mind of her attorney) can keep the money.
