Do you think Sanford sub-consciously sabotaged himself into revealing the affair?
Thinking back to the past week's news about Sanford's disappearance it is almost comical how poorly it was mishandled, almost as if he was trying to draw suspicion. It would have been easy for him to make an excuse, alert his staff, and take off to Argentina without raising much suspicion. Instead, he alerted no one, gave an obviously flawed story as to his location, could not be contacted even by his family during Father's Day, and did almost everything possible to draw attention to his suspicious behavior.

After reading the email exchange between Sanford and his mistress, it's obvious that he had very deep feelings for this woman. Do you think it's possible that sub-consciously he was actually attempting to draw attention to his affair out of either self-loathing, guilt, or just so he could make the relationship known?

2. From what I've heard,
listening to his wife's statement, I put together a scenario in my head, and it goes like this:

Sanford is in love with this woman, his wife found out - he possibly told her, unable to keep it a secret any more and unhappy at home.

They talk it over, go to counseling, the wife wants to work it out (she was, after all, once his campaign manager, so she's very savvy politically), and it becomes increasingly clear that Sanford just wants to be with his Argentinian lover.

The wife tells him to commit or get the fuck out of the house (those references in her statement to "preserving her dignity"), and he gets the fuck out of the house.

(I wonder where he's been living the past two weeks, and how come his staff didn't know this.)

First chance he gets, he splits for Argentina, to tell his lover that they have to end it.

Hence, his "crying in Argentina for five days" comment.

Now, he's going to try to work it out with the wife and kids.

Any way you cut it, the guy's life is fucked from now on, and my guess is that the marriage won't be saved.

Was he self-sabotaging? Yes, I can see it in those terms, if you figure that his anger at his wife is so great that he decides to take her down with him - assuming, as I am, that she's enjoying the First Lady of SC role as much as I suspect she does.

Or, no, he's just a lost man in love with someone who is not his wife, and he's stuck, because the lover isn't going to leave her husband, and his wife wants to keep the marriage together.

Either way, it's a mess, and Sanford's political career is over.............................

3. I think you have pegged
the situation perfectly. I feel sorry for all involved on a human level. On a political level, I hope he resigns.

5. Perfect
but I think wifey's comments on Fathers' Day weekend opened Pandora's box.
She is clearly no fool.
If he wanted to end the affair, he could have sent an email and perhaps that was the last straw for wifey.

6. My guess is that he's seriously in love,
and the Argentinian lady isn't interested in anything more than a romance. I think he went to Argentina to swear undying love to her, and she said "Thanks, but no thanks."

And the wife ain't taking no sloppy seconds. She truly is devious, and I have to applaud her for the way she's handled this.

I feel sorry for this guy, on this score, losing his love........................

I think he loves the Argentinian lady, but I'm not sure he wants to give up the wife's money. Wifey is a tough cookie and kicking him out of the house forced his hand so there goes the love of his life.
Moral of the story - don't marry for money to climb the political ladder.

As Rachel is saying he had no intention of confessing because he made the big mistake of lying to Gina Smith (up now on Rachel).

Shit - here it comes - the paper told him they had the emails and were going to publish them between this morning and the press conference.

21. I'll tell you a secret -
I'm a writer, and when my first novel was published, one of the places where it was advertised - to my shock - was something called "Romance Journal," or something like that. I don't recall, as I've never seen the magazine, just a copy of the ad sent to me by my agent.

The number of orders that came in via that ad was phenomenal.

I don't write romance novels - I could never get the hang of it, it being a very specialized art, which most people don't realize - but I was really surprised to discover how many readers that particular genre has.

After that, I never made fun of romance novels again. I think the people who can produce them have a unique gift, one that I lack.

So your compliment - thank you! - is giving me a good laugh. My agent would disagree with you ............ :hi:

:D You nailed it as well. Classic tale of hypocrisy, wealth and moral lapse, the heart's folly, longing... etc. It's timeless.

When I read those emails (and was ashamed that I did) I also thought of that flick, 84 Charing Cross Road with Anne Bancroft.

20. I thought of
"The End Of The Affair," which made a great movie with Julianne Moore and Ralph Fiennes. Oh, the heartbreak!

I think "84 Charing Cross Road" is the saddest movie I've ever seen, though. Now that Ms. Bancroft is gone, it becomes ever sadder for me.......................

:) You're making my eyes moisten.

Part of me thinks those leaked emails is just a great new marketing scheme designed to encourage empathy. On the other hand, ech...not really.

"84 Charing Cross Road" is one of the saddest films I've seen too. Bitter sweet.

14. I feel he'd had a really crappy week and no one was "feeling him" whithin his peer group.
So, he went off to the one person who he felt he could depend on to make him feel special. He'd just had 10 vetoes overturned a couple of days before he left, and knew his wife and family already knew of his affair and his relationship with them had suffered irrevocably. He was feeling irrelevant, and cornered and acted like a petulant child.

I've no idea if that means he subconsciously exposed himself, of if he just said "fuck all of you" and did what he wanted to do the most.

27. His wife told him to get out two weeks ago -
so, where has he been living?

Or is she at the vacation home with the kids and he's at the Mansion?

That could be it. No one would know they'd separated.

I wonder if it's a legal separation, or just a "Get the fuck out of here!"

I think the guy was utterly lost, and went where he found love, but, perhaps found out that it was just a romance, not a great big love affair, and the lady wasn't up for leaving her husband for him................

17. Earlier today his staff said he was "sailing off the coast of Argentina"
Except in Argentina, June is our December-January, so he'd be sailing in freezing weather and would have likely DIED. It would be like one of us taking a lovely sail off the coast of NE Canada in January. Seriously, you can't make this shit up.

19. I don't think it's a woman.

He was way way too eager to get out and have a press conference and admit everything and apologize to everyone?? He's immediately hiding the gender of "Maria" by admitting an affair. It's probably "Mario"

and what's more, I totally don't give a crap at all. Just so he leaves the animals alone.

I'm sick up to my eyeballs of these lying, cheating, pretty boys with deep tans and white teeth and all belong to some Xtian club, who cry and cry and apologize and think everything's OK now. :puke: :puke:

25. I seem to remember hearing
Maria in Buenos Aires is divorced with 2 kids.

Here's a stab at it: Sanford and Maria have been more than friends for longer than a year. She's probably been to the States a few times to see him. After getting kicked out of the house and realizing the money spiggot is turned off, Sanford made this trip to solidify things with Maria. Also, to plan on a way of them being together publicly in their own good time. The State reporter sure turned out to be the skunk at the picnic. Whatta mess.
