Cheney: Iraq, al-Qaeda linked pre-war

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Dick Cheney repeated his assertions of al-Qaeda links to Saddam Hussein's Iraq on Thursday as the Defense Department released a report citing more evidence that the prewar government did not cooperate with the terrorist group.

Cheney contended that al-Qaeda was operating in Iraq before the March 2003 invasion led by U.S. forces and that terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was leading the Iraqi branch of al-Qaeda. Others in al-Qaeda planned the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

"He took up residence there before we ever launched into Iraq, organized the al-Qaeda operations inside Iraq before we even arrived on the scene and then, of course, led the charge for Iraq until we killed him last June," Cheney told radio host Rush Limbaugh during an interview. "As I say, they were present before we invaded Iraq."

However, a declassified Pentagon report released Thursday said that interrogations of the deposed Iraqi leader and two of his former aides as well as seized Iraqi documents confirmed that the terrorist organization and the Saddam government were not working together before the invasion.

Iraq loses $8 billion through corruption

By BASSEM MROUE and QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA, Associated Press Writers Wed Apr 4, 3:48 PM ET

BAGHDAD -
Iraq's top corruption fighter said Wednesday that $8 billion in government money was wasted or stolen over the past three years and claimed he was threatened with death after opening an investigation into scores of Oil Ministry employees.

<...>

Former Electricity Minister Ayham al-Samaraie, who holds both U.S. and Iraqi citizenship, was convicted in that case and sentenced to two years in prison. He escaped from an Iraqi-run jail in the Green Zone on Dec. 17 and turned up in Chicago on Jan. 15. Al-Samaraie has said the Americans helped him escape.

<...>

A quarterly audit released Jan. 31 by Stuart Bowen Jr., the special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction, found the $300 billion U.S. war and reconstruction effort continues to be plagued with waste and corruption.

According to Bowen's report, the State Department paid $43.8 million to contractor DynCorp International for a residential camp for police training personnel outside of Baghdad's Adnan Palace grounds. The camp has been empty for months. About $4.2 million of the money was improperly spent on 20 VIP trailers and an Olympic-size pool, all ordered by the Iraqi Ministry of Interior but never authorized by the U.S.

2. It may have been off the table in November, but it ain't now and hain't been for a while.
One of the most egregiously arrogant things about this administration is that many of their most blatant offenses (the surge, the attorney firings, etc.) have taken place in the aftermath of last falls elections, during a period when the Bushi'ite militia leaders surely must have known that they would finally be falling under close congressional oversight. It is the absolute height of hubris that they would have proceeded to act as though they were untouchable -- and unimpeachable -- even with a Demo majority in Congress and the MSM on to their tricks.

The facts on record have changed since Pelosi first made those remarks about impeachment being off the table. So has the attitude of the MSM, and even more so the attitude of we-the-sheeple. What half a year ago appeared to be an exercise in government-crippling stalemate a la Clinton has instead come to be seen as an absolutely necessary defense of the Constitution a la Nixon. impeachment is back on the table, big time... as well it should be.

And what's my own personal reaction to this fundamental sea change in American political will?

4. If they aren't impeached or held accountable,
I will no longer be able to trust the government of the United States no matter who is in office or where the power lies. That's my bottom line. That will be my reality for the rest of my days on earth. That is a shitty way to live.
