actual crucifixions today in the Philippines

the Penitencia where people mirror Jesus' suffering by being nailed to a cross. Others dress up like Roman soldiers. Really. There's a bit more to it than this, and no one actually dies, but it sure isn't pleasant. The government and the Catholic Church both frown on the practice, but those who are involved are determined.

1. They have been doing that for years now. It is a stupid practice.

4. OK, a little weird
But not too different from Native American sun dances. The phillipino tribal groups involved probably had some similar rite that got 'disguised' as christian when the missionaries got ahold of them.

5. Totally sickening ritual
I'm tired of this getting the same yearly treatment in the press as if it were another charming Easter "tradition". Really pathetic.
