Talking about it on the webcam during breaks.

This may be a done deal, but I'm writing AAR.

I like Sam!

Update: He just said they're giving him a Sunday show and he isn't real happy about it.
They're taking him off the weekday shows.
(Changed subject to be more accurate.)

51. Yes, looks like I'm finally getting Steffi
I think that's probably whose replacing him in this market in that time slot. But even though I love Steffi, I adore Sam. This is upsetting.
Especially since the show on before the 9am slot is ARMSTRONG WILLIAMS. Why can't his show be pulled, and put either Sam or Stephanie in that slot. He's got some pull with the NY station, must have, only reason I can think to have him on an AAR affiliate. It sucks.

Everyone should write them, especially in the NY Market.
Just when the schedule was looking kind of perfect. They should get rid of John Elliot in the 10pm slot and give that to Sam.

I'm sad.

New Weekday Line-up Starting April 9th:

6am-9am KPOJ Mornings with Thom, Heidi and Carl

12pm-3pm Ed Schultz
3pm-6pm Randi Rhodes
6pm-9pm ?

11. That's probably a local station lineup, not Air America's official lineup.
So is my local station, which puts Randi on (on tape delay) at 4pm-7pm MST, followed immediately by Rachel Maddow. Mike Malloy isn't on anymore (he was fired from Air America and now does his show for Nova-M, maybe your local station picked up Malloy's show and mixes it with Air America shows.)

They're a mixed station. AAR, Jones, Nova-M.
I like that they have a local Thom Hartman show. I'm all for local as well as syndicated in the mix.

Looks like all AAR has left is Randi.

7. Has AAR done anything right?
Honestly, I'm not trying to be a jerk. But I gave up on AAR about a year ago due to piss poor scheduling, management decisions, crap shows, etc. And it sounds like it's gotten worse since then even. They took off or reduced the hours of the more entertaining shows (Unfiltered, Morning Sedition, etc.) and then seemed to want to put either more middle of the road, concilliatory hosts on (Springer, etc.) or people like Randi Rhodes who I have absolutely no interest in listening to. And yes, I know Randi was on from the beginning, but my point is that I'd like to be entertained along with my politics/news which is why I liked people like Liz Winstead, Chuck D, Mark Maron, Sam Seder, etc.

64. Yes indeed
Thom is probably the best of all the progressive hosts at connecting the dots and describing the big picture. Mike Molloy is great at explaining the Vast Reichwing Conspiracy, but Thom is so well read in history and economics that he can tie virtually any Repig into knots in three sentences.

Actually, I have liked all of the lefty talkers I've heard on AA Minnesota, but Thom and Mike are my favorites.

to Sam - stream and then listen in the car on XM. I don't have access to a computer or radio where I can listen to either of them live for most of the morning. I listen to Stephanie's podcast on the next morning and listen to Sam before I get to work.

It always was odd for me because the two shows I like the most were on opposite each other.

39. Apparently he just found out, perhaps even just today.
He looked really morose during the breaks. Then a caller asked him about it and he danced around it. After that when Jeanean walked in he said he got sandbagged by a caller about his leaving.

He then said he would be making the announcement next week. Why not today? Having worked with the suits in the broadcast industry for over 3 decades, I can imagine that they told him not to say anything until next week. They probably want to make an "official" announcement of some kind about the programming change that will include whatever they're replacing him with.

many of us cannot listen to AAR during the week, except at night or drivetime and the weekends are packed with "best of" shows. I have often wished for more live weekend content.

If Sam is part of that lineup he should make my weekend listening much better.

I rarely listen to a show when it airs, but I try to catch them via podcast. If Seder goes from 5 shows to 1 show that will reduce the total Sammy-ness that we can get.

I am sick of AAR. Here's a list of those that they have ditched:

Marc Maron, Mike Malloy, now Sam, then who?

107. That is why I qualified
my OP with "IF", neither of us knows what his contract looks likes so assuming this will be a financial hardship to Sam is not supportable, but is a possibility if his agent got him a really bad contract.

Professionally he is surely hurting and the limited time on air is surely a blow to both Sam and his fans but he'll have other opportunities open up because he is a talented radio personality.

The f-word

Reviewer: Frederick, from spring valley, CA, USA Date: October 24, 2006

It took me only three minutes of listening to the arrogance of Seder, the primary author, using the f-word a dozen times to realize that this is nothing more than a Bush-bashing hate-filled liberal diatribe bemoaning the fact that they are not in power.

31. I love Sam, but I think more and more stations were picking up Stephanie
Miller.

I podcast both of them to listen on my own time, but Stephanie is getting too "gamey" for me. I don't really like that much sex talk.

Truth to tell, Jim Ward - - Voice deity on Stephanie Miller - - is hard to compete with.

Sam is very good, and he had picked up a lot of Al Franken's regular guests.

Sam should be back on in the evenings, where there's not such strong competition.

Edited on Fri Apr-06-07 01:17 PM by CaseyBuck
So many progressive talk stations clear Stephanie Miller, so whoever has that time slot will probably be doomed, unless they do a REALLY good job.

This'll really piss off KPOJ, since they just announced yesterday their new lineup, with Sam Seder at 6 PM. Now they have to shuffle their lineup AGAIN (probably by putting Mike Malloy live at that 6 PM slot).

45. Mark Green has said there will be changes...

...and now Thom Hartmann, who broadcasts out of Oregon, is amazingly knowledgeable, interesting and popular. Randi Rhodes, who’s on from 3 to 6 on Air America. Very opinionated and entertaining. She’s followed by Rachel Maddow, who reads and comments on and makes fun of the news. I think we have a very strong lineup. We will be making changes, inevitably, because you never know who the next—

That's from Mark Green's Truthdig Interview. Note that in the same paragraph where he mentions making changes, he avoids mentioning Sam Seder. When I saw that, I kind of figured Sam would be on the way out.

I like Sam, but changes are inevitable. I'm willing to wait and see what comes next.

47. New Ownership...New Changes
I just did a survey of Progressive Talk radio and was amazed to see how many station have dropped the Progressive Talk format in the past several months. A lot of them were Clear Channel stations that had suffered low ratings and were certain AAR was going to fold. Green came in and helped stop the bleeding, but now the network needs to rebuild or fall back into financial turmoil.

AAR's caught between a financial rock and hard place still...unless the Greens are willing to throw millions of dollars with little assurance of any success. They have Jones moving in on the key dayparts on major stations that are making things tougher and NovaM still spinning its wheels while it tries to figure how to get onto more stations. It's getting to be a murky picture for Progressive Talk and Sam just doesn't fit in with the changes going on. I wish him well.

Edited on Fri Apr-06-07 04:43 PM by KeepItReal
They don't play him on the radio in the mornings, so I am able to download his shows and listen when I can thanks to the Air America Premium Membership.

Fortunately, I can listen to Randi Rhodes (Love Her!!) on the Radio, but if Sam goes to one day a week, why the hell did I just buy the unlimited AAR membership??

They already took off my boy Marc Maron in the AM, now Sam!?!?

49. I'm sorry, I heard him say something rather different
A caller said there were rumors that Sam had said that next week would be his last week and asked him to repond.

Sam said that the discussion was premature, and that he had no input on the programming side of AAR, that hiring decisions were done above his pay grade, and that he would be able to discuss all of this later when the time is right. He mentioned the Sunday show.

Not exactly an "I'm gone," but still disturbing.

is CHANGE AFTER CHANGE! I think Randi is too foul mouthed and repitive to listen to FIVE DAYS A WEEK. She's funny at first but doesn't know when to LEAVE IT!

The "Young Turks" are too trendy "Rapid Fire" and kind of lame for me....

They moved Ed Schultz to go up agains Limpballs in a time slot where he won't get more viewers than he had the possibility of getting in his old "Drive Time" slot from 3-6 here in NC. Psst...those folks who listen to Limpballs NEVER CHANGE THEIR DIAL AND DON'T DO SATTELITE RADIO! So. moving Ed was a HUGE BLUNDER!

Franken is gone and the WHOLE LINE UP IS A MESS!

I'm almost ready to CUT OFF MY ACCOUNT...because I ONLY SUBSCRIBED FOR POLICTICAL ALTERNATIVE..NOT..the MUSIC!

87. We need more than AAR. Maybe Nova could fill the gap?
It would be wonderful to have a choice of different liberal talkers one could choose from populating different stations.

Right now in Dallas, we have only right wingers. As I drive around the country, all I hear is RW hate spew.

With XM, it's OK, but they've decided to put Shultz on instead of Hartman.

In a perfect radio world, I would like to be able to surf between Mike, Sam, Guy, and Ed.

Even more perfect, all of these guys on when I don't have to choose between them.

put on a show from 10-11 called "The Other Side" which is crappy,,..far too much rightwing messages. Then they have Hartmann for 2 hours. Randi and Rachel follow and after that, who knows, because I can't even get the station up here in Las Cruces much after 5 pm now (and not even that late in the winter). They were airing "The Best of Sam Seder" (the Friday show) on Saturday morning. I love Sam but we got very little of him on KHRO.

On top of that, they break into programming to air college basketball (UTEP, I think). It's a real dog of a station...

Sam should be following up Randi.

Rachel should be my morning coffee.

And in a really perfect world, Mike Molloy n the mix!

Also, AAR should give Guy James a shot someplace.

92. This is interesting
reading.............

http://blatherwatch.blogs.com/talk_radio/2007/04/air_america_pul.html#comments

New owner, Mark Green reportedly told people he wanted "less substance" in the 9-ta-noon timeslot. Hence they offered it, to no avail to comedian Marc Maron, and tried unsuccessfully to get Jones Radio's Stephanie Miller with her comedic format.

Many think Elberg is enamored with Free FM "hot talk," the testosteronic, hyper-sexual audio foreplay like Anthony & Opie, or The Radio Chick except he'd have it with politics- a coupling of hot libs with hot libidos in sweaty, partisan, lizard-brain, 9-ta-noon, weekdaily orgies.

"I think he thought Maron could morph into that," says one staffer, "and when Maron balked, he'd gotten himself in a position he couldn't back off of- that there was something wrong with Sam's program."

Elberg really wanted Maron back on; and, says a staffer, he first tried to can Randi Rhodes, "but the minority partners refused to let him."

Edited on Sat Apr-07-07 01:15 AM by LibInTexas
(announcing it as his last day) on the Ceder show and cut his bridges with AAR.

Sam didn't much ask him what was up. During the breaks on the "SammyCam" he just grunted.

At this point I figured somethihng was up with Sam as well. He was pretty closed mouthed on the air, but during the off-radio breaks on the webcam, Sam groused off-mike. He would respond to IMs with yeses and noes. The jist I got was that he was in negotiations with the management. Didn't want to talk about it and wasn't sure what was up.

MY TAKE:
Miller is beating his ass in ratings and it was either take the Sunday job, or bye bye.

98. Liberal Radio is losing ground. Look at this...
http://talkingradio.blogspot.com/2007/01/big-changes-are-in-works-at-air-america.html

On February 1, 2006, coverage of liberal talk radio* peaked. There were 64 stations carrying three or more liberal hosts daily.**Since that time it has been all down hill for lib talk. In the past year, the format has gained one station and lost 23. This represents a decline of 34.4% in station coverage and 19.0% in potential listeners. Currently, there are 42 liberal talk stations reaching 65,775,234 potential radio listeners. Actual listeners are 1.2 to 2.7 million per month depending on who you get that information from.

* Stations offering three or more liberal hosts per day.

**Stations offering at least three lib talk hosts per day in Arbitron rated markets. There are about 15 lib talk stations in communities outside of Arbitron rated markets.
