I do. Wish i lived in South Carolina, though...it would make it a lot easier.

1. Why become a public figure if he wants privacy? Sheesh. He must
be doing something he's ashamed of.

2. Damn straight! And we have to give them a contact number -
even when we go camping. We also have to file a vac request ahead of time and say who will be covering for us if we can't be reached.

I work in web dev/tech support for a school. Sounds like there's less hassle if you're a Governor.

4. And I usually keep in touch with the office while away
You would think that a Governor would need to keep in touch.

5. If you're referring to that Sanford guy, he IS the boss.
Edited on Tue Jun-23-09 10:51 AM by rocktivity
If he didn't want his family to know where he was, I guess that's his personal business. But when a boss goes away, it's considered to be good idea to leave an official second in command.

7. As a SC state employee, if I'm absent from work for 3 days without notice, I can be canned
and it is assumed that I've willingly given up my post.

8. he let them know he was taking time off didnt he? and NO, my hubby doesnt have to stay in contact
when i worked, i didnt have to stay in contact, or answer the phone.

i think this is a stupid, non story and the bad of our "information" period. unless i am missing something in the story, i cannot believe people have made this a story. it is like the "outrage" over every stupid thing obama does where there is no outrage

13. He didn't inform his family, didn't leave anyone in charge, and didn't leave contact info
Edited on Tue Jun-23-09 11:12 AM by rocktivity
Whether you tell your boss your vacation plans depends on what kind of job you have. If your job is governor of one of the United States, doing what Sanford did is just plain irresponsible.

20. No, I don't believe he did...
From the stories I have read and heard, he simply disappeared without notice to anyone, including his family. He has popped up now, and is actually surprised that this is getting press attention.

30. It is my understanding
that they knew he was gone only because he didn't show up in the office. He did not, apparently, tell anyone beforehand that he would be gone.

12. No, not where I'm going
I do have to tell them I'm going to be away and for how long. My line management likes to encourage us to not stay in contact when we are on vacation and I like that. No email, no voicemail, no cellphones.

24. Although my office is located at my home, I still have to be in touch.
We have a 24 hour response requirement. So, if you called me at 3 PM on a Friday afternoon, I must return your contact by Friday at 3 PM.

If I plan to be away, all I have to do is let the office and my students know. (I work for an Independent Study Program.) We have a system in place so when I'm away, my students have someone else to contact with questions and concerns.

If everyone apparently knew that this governor was "unavailable," be it Naked Hiking Day or writing, or whatever, why, then, didn't they just tell the press that he was away on a short personal working weekend and let it go? Why all the "we don't know," "where is he?" "where is my husband" stuff I've been reading?

As for being gone on Father's Day, he might have told his sons that they'll have a special Father's Day next weekend. When my dad was TDY with the Air Force, there were holidays and special days that he was gone. You don't get caught up with that, you just understand that sometimes sacrifices have to be made. (Although Naked Hiking Day doesn't seem a real reason to sacrafice, in my humble little opinion.)

That being said... Naked Hiking Day by yourself doesn't sound real "family values-y" to me! Hmmmm... wonder who he was hiking with? Not his wife!
