AP source: DHS to kill domestic satellite spying

By EILEEN SULLIVAN
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A government official says Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano plans to kill a controversial program begun by the Bush administration to use U.S. spy satellites for domestic security and law enforcement.

The program was announced in 2007 and was to have been run by Homeland Security. It has been delayed because of privacy and civil liberty concerns.

The official said lawmakers who objected to the program, known as the National Applications Office, will be notified about the decision Tuesday. The official was not authorized to discuss the decision and spoke on condition of anonymity Monday.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency and Interior Department will continue to have access to this satellite imagery.

4. How princpled is FEMA compared to Homeland Security? This is a
questions that has a touch of sarcasm and would have been typically asked during theBush Administration. I ask now because I want to be educated. Is there a difference? What is the rational of allowing one and not the other. Is FEMA only going to use it in case of natural disasters?

5. Good question, but we don't know yet. Sadly, we have to wait for
a crisis to see how they manage. And other than a disaster, I don't know why else FEMA would have use for this system.
