Whenever you feel you're through with Obama - remember, it could be a lot worse
Believe me, there have been times in the last month where I have felt like screaming and throwing something at Barack Obama's image on the TV, newspaper, whatever. The awful anti-gay brief, his general spinelessness on the gay rights front, the lack of transparency we'd been promised, the refusal to actually use his popularity to tell Congress where they can stick their compromises on healthcare reform. Th ere have been bright signs which bode well for the coming years of his presidency: ending torture, setting a deadline for exiting Iraq, the stimulus, Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, restoring funding for stem cell research, his spot-on response to Iran etc. However I, like many others on here, feel extremely underwhelmed by Obama at times.

Here's how I keep the faith when I'm really low. And I mean 'I wish he'd never run at all so I didn't get my hopes up like this' low.

I think about what the alternative could have been. I think about what John 'bomb bomb Iran' McCain would have done in response to the Iranian uprising. I think of the few rights gays currently have actually being overturned.I think about the kind of Supreme Court nominee McCain would have picked - the kind who would work to overturn Roe v Wade and deny us women control over our bodies.

Above all, I think these two words: President Palin. :nuke:

No matter how frustrated we might get with him at times, Obama at his worst is still a million times better than McCain, and a billion times better than Palin (and needless to say, Dubya).

He's also only been President for 5 months. He's got the best part of 4 years left of his term. Let's judge him then.

In the meantime, let's keep criticizing him when he makes decisions which baffle and anger us. As some have said, whenever he goes wrong, we must try and put him right. Let's show that we are not the mindless sheep those on the right-wing are. But let's not lose hope.

1. How could it be worse? At least when a Rethug is in office we know to wear protective gear.
When one of our own has taken office we don't expect to be sucker punched.

12. Do you ever get the feeling you have lost all perspective? Saying it wouldn't be worse
if it was a Republican in office shows you learned nothing from the last eight years. These kinds of statements are why people start ridiculing the people wailing and gnashing their teeth around here.

3. I haven't felt "through" with Obama, but I agree with you.
Thing is, I started out with lowered expectations and he's pretty much met them. Kind of sad if you think about it.

5. so let it get "worse." at least it would be out in the open, without a few kumbaya-coated
bones thrown to We The People.

Then we could blame it on the repukes instead of pretending it's "okay" because it's a "democrat."

13. if it walks like a duck...
you know the saying.

To say that the US has stopped its descent into fascism simply because of an election is to be missing the big picture, in my opinion.

17. Wow...All You Have to Do to be President Is Be Better Than McCain!
Edited on Mon Jun-22-09 07:09 PM by Toasterlad
Hey...I'm better than McCain! Someone come kiss my ass, STAT! Plus, it's been five months, and I haven't started a war with Iran or made more than a token gesture towards civil rights! Where are my cheerleaders???
