"The question of female enfranchisement has reached that stage in England at which it can be discussed with gravity and fairness.

"This result is mainly due to the ability of its chief advocates, and to their persistent disregard of all the irrelevant discussion and shallow ridicule in which their adversaries have endeavored to envelope the main question at issue.

"It must not be forgotten that the question wears, in Great Britain, a very different aspect from that which characterizes it here. The changes immediately contemplated are not so great as on this side, and the anomolies sought to be removed are much more glaring."

"Although the enacting clause of the bill provided that wherever in acts relating to the qualifications of voters, "words occur which import the masculine gender, the same shall be held to include females," its provisions would not in any way affect the position of married women."
