How long does it take to clear customs and get into Tokyo from NRT?
Edited on Sun Jun-21-09 11:08 PM by DemoTex
Dr. DemoTex is scheduled to land at NRT on her American Airlines flight in 16 minutes. How long does the customs/passport-control process there take? How far and how long into central Tokyo? She has a Europe/Asia cell phone (T-Mobile). Maybe she can switch that on right after they land. I have not been in Tokyo in 40 years, so I do not remember these details.

Long cold day at the lookout. I am exhausted from the cold weather. But as of 18:00 PDT I am off until Wednesday morning. I'll pack up and get out of here by mid-morning tomorrow. My relief is coming in for about six hours tomorrow, but not on Tuesday. My fire battalion commander told me to get lost, not answer my cell, and take some time off (and get warm .. he advised). The forest is so wet and cold that the biggest fire danger now is campers with campfires and volatile fire starters (aka petrol).

Anyway, hoping to talk to Dr. D. soon. It should be 13:01 in Japan now.

From the lookout in the Deschutes NF wilderness ..

BTW: I may do the fancy SPA hotel .. the River House in Bend. I'm ready for some TLC.

1. Depends on how she's getting to Tokyo
Edited on Sun Jun-21-09 11:18 PM by oregonjen
Clearing immigration and customs can be easy if there are no lines, if there are lines, wow, I've waited an hour before, with two small kids. Not fun.

Train ride and bus are the main ways to get to Tokyo. About 2 hours from airport to destination. Forgot to add, there's a lot of walking with suitcases, elevators, escalators, etc. That's what is time consuming.

Hope that helps. :hi:

4. Thanks OJ
I just tried her phone. But they may still be taxiing.

Are you in Oregon? I'm here deep in the Deschutes NF wilderness freezing my a** off! Had snow this morning (see my Journal).

3. Probably 30 minutes max at NRT
after getting out of the airplane. The Japanese immigration and customs people are very efficient. T-mobile should work fine in Japan. The buses and trains into central Tokyo can take anywhere between 50 to 90 minutes depending on the reservation and route.

5. Knowing her, she will take the fastest possible transportation. Probably train, eh?
She can't call me, because my cell does not work in the lookout tower. Matters not. After almost 36 years we are semi-telepathic.

7. immigration can take as much as an hour or more
depending on the lines. also, things could be slower than usual due to swine flu checks.

do you know what area she's going to in Tokyo? travel time can definitely vary, it's a pretty big city. at least an hour using the fastest train (there is a 15 minute chopper service, but I'm assuming not?).

10. I'm looking at the rooms with fireplaces .. and hot-tubs.
You can't believe how good any heat at all sounds to me right now! I've got that hard-to-cure chill. And I think mani-pedies for both us (dog amd man) of might be in line! I'm grossed out by the black volcano soil that gets under my fingernails.

Listening to Brahms' "Variations on a Theme by Haydn" on Sirius/XM right now. Love my Sirius classical channels. Sirius hardware power varies from internal "D" cell (rechargeable through the solar system), to direct solar through the battery banks (mine or the USFS if the sun is out), to stored solar in either of the battery banks if well charged, to .. finally .. my 2 KW generator (it's running now).

Visitors hear classical music or opera, see flower arrangements, smell sweet smells, and get to peruse my library and meet Nick-Nick. King's English, only, spoken on the tower. You would love the place!

12. There isn't the slightest doubt in my feeble brain I'd absolutely love visiting y'all there.

It'd be so supremo cool it'd scramble my brain. Transcendently cool. Out-of-body cool.

Brahms is just right, I think. A little Puccini would be awesome, too.

This room looks just right for y'all ...

Nick-Nick can sprawl in front of the fireplace while you soak in the hot tub. (Or vice versa.)
