Neda, young girl brutally killed in Iran, becoming symbol of rebellion

They call her Neda, which means 'voice' in Farsi, and her death has become the central rallying cry of the Iranian rebellion.

The pretty teenage girl killed by what appears to be a single sniper shot on the streets of Tehran Saturday is now a potent symbol for pro-democracy protesters battering the Islamic regime.

Her quick and brutal death in the arms of her howling father was captured on close-up video, posted to Facebook and sent to computer screens across the world.

"Neda you broke my heart, too young to die," was one of a flood of messages on Twitter.

"RIP Neda, the world cries seeing your last breath," read another. "Neda is everyone's sister, everyone's daughter, everyone's voice for freedom," said a third.

Iconic posters of her dead face, open-eyed and bloody, were carried by demonstrators in Los Angeles and New York City within hours.

The graphic video was originally posted to Facebook by an Iranian expatriate in Holland who said it was sent to him by a friend in Tehran, a doctor who tried to save the girl.

The expat said her name was Neda Soltani, a 16-year-old philosophy student.

not that it makes much difference but it would make more sense if she is a philosophy student at 27 than at 16.

horrible either way. there was no reason to shoot her. and no excuse for the person who did it either.

6. She is 28. She was not with her father.

She was with her professor. She is a philosophy student. She was shot by a basij militia thug riding by on a motorcycle. She has already been buried. Her memorial service will happen even though the government has officially canceled it.

No one seems to be able to control the paramilitary basij militia. Creating a martyr, particularly a young woman who was just standing to the side, is the last thing the mullahs wanted.

This will go on.

i think she looks closer to 28. and something about her going there with other students was mentioned so that could have been her professor.

the thing is horrible either way.

I've been hearing different sets of facts for most of today.

Like I said, info is fluid and I'm just sticking with the original reports.

We'll find out the truth sooner or later, but I'm not sure how the discrepancies change the reality in such a way as to matter.

This reminds me of those days when the bloggers were trying to figure out who Bristol Palin's baby daddy was, so many names were flying around and I felt badly for those who were mistakenly named. Same here.

But the fact is that the people of Tehran are mostly only sending info out, not so much looking at what is circulating out here so they don't necessarily know yet what mistakes need correction. Otherwise you can be sure that we'd have heard definitively who it was or was not.
