US tries to stop Geronimo lawsuit.
US officials have moved to block a legal bid by descendants of Apache leader Geronimo to have his remains reburied.

Geronimo's relatives say some body parts were stolen almost 100 years ago by members of a society linked to Yale University to keep in their clubhouse.

The relatives want to rebury the warrior, who died in 1909, near his birthplace in New Mexico.

But the justice department has asked a federal judge to dismiss their lawsuit.

The society, known as Skull and Bones, is alleged to have stolen some of Geronimo's remains from a burial plot in Oklahoma in 1918.

Skull and Bones trumps traditional burial. WTF?

1. This is bigger than just Skull & Bones
Geronimo's skull was alleged to have been stolen by one Prescott Bush.

Once again the Bush Crime Family is allowed to remain above the law. :grr:

7. Exactly what is the "US Officials" stake in this? Why would they feel they had a say?
What business is it of theirs that the Apache are suing a private club, how is the US involved?

Who is misusing our government officials for their personal protection in law? I know I know, same old usual suspects. :puke:

10. It might be because it's a suit by a foreign country.
I've been to a few reservations they have signs that say "You are now leaving the United States of America."

13. I see from below it's because they included Pres. Obama and the DOJ in the suit.
Which does give them a stake, so that makes sense. If the Skull & Bones had any decency or manners at all they'd return them with an public apology.

9. Justice Dept. asks judge to drop Obama from suit filed by Geronimo’s heirs
The U.S. Department of Justice asked a federal judge to limit the scope of a lawsuit filed by the descendants of legendary Apache warrior Geronimo.

The suit, which names President Barack Obama and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates along with Yale University and the secretive Order of the Skull & Bones fraternity, aims to have Geronimo’s physical remains and personal effects transported from Fort Sill, Oklahoma, to southern New Mexico for a proper tribal burial.

The Justice Department’s brief, filed with the U.S. District Court for Washington, D.C. on June 10, seeks to remove the president and defense secretary from the suit ...

12. They sued parties who should not be parties - the president and Sec of Defense.
I support the effort to get Geronimo's bones returned to his tribe/family, but you have to sue the right parties. Suing the president and the Sec of Defense was grandstanding, intended to get media coverage, which it did.

16. Yes. Anyone can sue anyone for anything, until motions to dismiss arrive.
There appears to be a viable cause of action. Jurisdiction is proper. The plaintiffs appear to have standing. And the Skull and Bones defendant is certainly an appropriate defendant.

I hope they put a beat down on the Bonesmen, who richly deserve it. Their taking the bones of Geronimo for their ridiculous little frat should be seen for the grave theft that it was, and they should be made to return the bones.

Of course, DNA testing could prove that the bones the Bonesmen have aren't even Native American, in which case the Bonesmen get to keep the bones, but lose their story about having Geronimo's bones. Either way this comes out, the Bonesmen will lose their story about having the bones of Geronimo.

we're talking about with Skull and Bones.
