The Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America undermines Canadian sovereignty and is the brainchild of corporations, whose only objective is to increase profit at the expense of ordinary citizens in Canada, the United States and Mexico, according to panelists at a conference organized by the Council of Canadians last weekend.
Under the theme "Challenging the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America," the two-day conference drew more than 500 participants from Canada, the United States, Mexico and Australia.
In a panel discussion, Dorval Brunelle, professor of sociology at the Université du Québec à Montréal, said the real brains behind the SPP–a trilateral framework involving the U.S., Canada, and Mexico–are top executives from large corporations in North America, who implement policies without the public's knowledge and in cahoots with the U.S. Congress, which calls the shots.

Echoing Mr. Brunelle's claim that the SPP is led by corporations, John Foster, principal researcher at the North-South Institute in Ottawa, said executives from the corporations advise the governments of Canada, the U.S., and Mexico on priorities and have access to top politicians that "none of us has." Mr. Foster said democracies must not allow corporations to set the agenda.
