Iran Season: A very informative series of 4 documentaries recently shown on AJ English
Iran Season

On February 1, 1979, Ayatollah Ruholla Khomeini returned from exile to Tehran, where he was greeted by millions of Iranians at the airport.

Days earlier the last Shah of Iran, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, had fled the country, a year after public demonstrations had begun against his rule.

His departure signalled the culmination of the Iranian Islamic revolution.

Thirty years on, Al Jazeera presents a series of special programmes analysing the political circumstances prior to the revolution and how Iranian society has been shaped by the events of 1979.

We hear from eyewitnesses who personally knew the Shah and the Ayatollah, dissect the anatomy of the revolution and report from Iran on how the country has changed: http://english.aljazeera.net/programmes/general/2009/01/2009119142752747113.html

1. K&R. Thanks so much!
We were just having a discussion on another thread about how helpful showing this kind of programming would be just now... :yourock:

2. You're most welcome
They have some very insightful 1st hand commentaries, lots of empirical info. that helps put everything that's happening right now in perspective.

Hope you find them as interesting as I did.

BTW I posted 'Anatomy of a Revolution' on the videos forum the other day but it dropped like a stone: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=385x326661

Maybe it would be a good idea to see if there's any interest in starting a "Documentaries Forum" where we can post things like this and discuss them...?

5. Thanks again and kicking...
I've seen some of Al Jazeera on the news and in films ("Control Room") and it's pretty enlightening under "normal" circumstances. Thanks so much for the suggestion and the link... :hi:

I'd be willing to bet that there would be a lot of interest in documentaries on DU. People went nuts about the amazing John Adams series, as did I... My BF has a whole collection of documentaries, think most DUers are both news junkies and history buffs. I'd much rather watch a biography of Harry Truman than what's currently on commercial TV... :-)

I'll kick your other thread, but you never know. Last week, I posted a video of Rachel Maddow on Iran and only got one reply! :-(

BTW, thanks for all your great posts. There are a few who post in the video forum whose threads I pay attention to, knowing they're something I need to see, and yours are terrific! Thanks! :yourock:
