Edited on Sat Jun-20-09 09:07 PM by Kittycat
Her name was Neda, Which means "Voice" or "Call" in Farsi. She is the voice of the people of Iran. Please don't forget her.

Warning: Graphic scene of young teen girl shot by the Basij - dies with her father by her side, shouting her name. Neda.

This excerpt from HuffPo, from another Iranian Blogger who wrote last night about possibly not surviving the day. She writes again today, this time about Neda.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/06/13/iran-demonstrations-viole_n_215189.html

8:53 PM ET -- "Sister, have a short sleep, your last dream be sweet." Yesterday we printed a touching letter from an Iranian woman that began with these ominous lines: "I will participate in the demonstrations tomorrow. Maybe they will turn violent. Maybe I will be one of the people who is going to get killed..."
Story continues below

Tonight, she posted a second letter, passed along and translated by two readers. She writes about her "sister" in this cause who was killed today, referring to Neda.

Yesterday I wrote a note, with the subject line "tomorrow is a great day perhaps tomorrow I'll be killed." I'm here to let you know I'm alive but my sister was killed...

I'm here to tell you my sister died while in her father's hands
I'm here to tell you my sister had big dreams...
I'm here to tell you my sister who died was a decent person... and like me yearned for a day when her hair would be swept by the wind... and like me read "Forough" ... and longed to live free and equal... and she longed to hold her head up and announce, "I'm Iranian"... and she longed to one day fall in love to a man with a shaggy hair... and she longed for a daughter to braid her hair and sing lullaby by her crib...

my sister died from not having life... my sister died as injustice has no end... my sister died since she loved life too much... and my sister died since she lovingly cared for people...

my loving sister, I wish you had closed your eyes when your time had come... the very end of your last glance burns my soul....

sister have a short sleep. your last dream be sweet.

I have tried to keep a distance from this and not watch too much, but her face haunts me today...
There are so many women involved in this movement, so many YOUNG women.

I stand and cry in Solidarity for my sisters who fight for justice, I pray for them on Solstice tomorrow and as I tuck in my own children in a quiet little town so far away from all the turmoil these people and SO many others live with daily...

17. That's just it - she wasn't a fighter at all.
I understand many people died today, many innocent people, that never threw a stone - even to protect others I'm sure. But this young woman was standing on the sidewalk with her father - 1 kilometer from the protests. A Basij chose to take direct aim, and fire on her - one of the most innocent of all.

This is a direct act of contempt - murder. There was no war to be fought with this young girl. But now her death serves a bigger cause.

Not that it would make a difference, her death is still a tragedy, but this is the first I heard that she wasn't part of the protest. This is kind of what I mean in my OP. The myth begins to get bigger then the truth and when the truth comes out people become disillusioned.

23. Everywhere.
From the moment it was reported she was shot, it was stated that she was just standing on the sidewalk with her father, observing from a distance, but not part of the protest. It's been reported on Andrew Sullivan's Dish, Huffpo, and several other sites.

25. From Huffpo, linked in my OP - for the skeptic.

2:37 PM ET -- Graphic video of a woman shot. In the past hour, I've received this video via email and IM dozens and dozens of times. I had various YouTube versions linked below but they kept being removed, so I've uploaded the videos to our own servers. Warning: they are intensely graphic scenes depicting a woman who has just been shot and dies on camera. They are extremely difficult to watch (though, rather stunningly, they were aired on CNN earlier today).

Still images are here if they would be easier to see for you.

Again, reader beware.

Here is the statement posted along with the original video:

Basij shots to death a young woman in Tehran's Saturday June 20th protests At 19:05 June 20th Place: Karekar Ave., at the corner crossing Khosravi St. and Salehi st. A young woman who was standing aside with her father watching the protests was shot by a basij member hiding on the rooftop of a civilian house. He had clear shot at the girl and could not miss her. However, he aimed straight her heart. I am a doctor, so I rushed to try to save her. But the impact of the gunshot was so fierce that the bullet had blasted inside the victim's chest, and she died in less than 2 minutes. The protests were going on about 1 kilometers away in the main street and some of the protesting crowd were running from tear gass used among them, towards Salehi St. The film is shot by my friend who was standing beside me. Please let the world know.

This is the nature of social unrest. She has become that symbol, like her counterparts a generation ago did in 1979. That is the nature of the beast

31. This is starting to remind me of Tiananmen Square, almost exactly 20 years ago.
And we know how badly that ended.

The movement lasted seven weeks, from Hu's death on 15 April until tanks cleared Tiananmen Square on 4 June. In Beijing, the resulting military response to the protesters by the PRC government left many civilians dead or severely injured. The number of deaths is not known and many different estimates exist. There were reports that 2,500 people were dead and 7,000 - 10,000 people were wounded according to the Red Cross.

Following the violence, the government conducted widespread arrests to suppress protesters and their supporters, cracked down on other protests around China, banned the foreign press from the country and strictly controlled coverage of the events in the PRC press. Members of the Party who had publicly sympathized with the protesters were purged, with several high-ranking members placed under house arrest, such as General Secretary Zhao Ziyang. The violent suppression of the Tiananmen Square protest caused widespread international condemnation of the PRC government. -Wiki

42. Video of Neda **before** she was shot (standing in the crowd)
Edited on Sun Jun-21-09 02:50 PM by rainbow4321
From Twitter and CNN...it's a very short clip, she and her father appear at about 10 seconds. You'll recognize the father because of his blue shirt and white hair--he was seen leaning over her in the original video (after she was murdered).

In THIS video, she is standing to his left.
They were not yelling or throwing anything, just bystanders watching protesters in the streets.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWHT37pQmmE

CNN showed both videos this afternoon, back to back.

There was a woman being interviewed that said she has seen "Neda's friends" online talking about her...saying that she was a 27 yr old philosophy student. Contradicts previous reports that she was 16 yrs old (unless that was referring to someone else who was killed). I imagine we will get more information about her over the next few days.

63. Info on Neda from an Iranian on FB

Due to an Iranian Blog as I previewed:
http://fmortaz.blogspot.com/
I got some new information about her as bellow:
"Neda Aqa Soltan"
she was born on 1982
she was a student of Philosophy
at the 20th of June, she were along with her philosophy master and some of
her classmates in the protest.
She has been shot on heart by 2 Basijies on a motor cycle while she was behind of others and speaking on her mobile phone.

It seems the old man next to her is her master and she died on his hands.
People have stopped the Basijies and it seems the shooter is killed.

At june 21st, her body has given to her family with this condition that
they must bury her as soon as possible and secretly.

It has done under high security situation.
her memory will celebrate in june 22nd in Niloufar Mosque.
