BAGHDAD (AFP) - US tanks deployed in the Iraqi capital to stop hundreds of angry protestors marching on the coalition's city-centre headquarters as Shiite Muslim radicals took to the streets across central and southern Iraq.

The protest in the capital turned violent as some supporters of radical leader Moqtada Sadr threw themselves at the US tanks and a police officer said at least two of the demonstrators had been crushed.

There was no immediate confirmation of the deaths from police headquarters or the US military.

Huge protests were also held in the central pilgrimage city of Najaf and as far south as Amara, while unarmed militiamen from Sadr's Mehdi Army paraded in Sadr City, a sprawling mainly Shiite neighbourhood of the capital regarded as a radical stronghold.

1. Doesn't the mere existance of your links prove they were reporting it?
Furthermore, what were the soldiers in those tanks supposed to do? If somone literally throws themselves in front of your tank, theres about nothing you can do.

Now, the soldiers never should have been there in the first place, but thats another issue entirely.

3. Agence France-Presse isn't our media. French media
Our media NYT, WaPo, LATimes, all our cable news shows didn't report on it.

And a better question is why would someone use tanks against protesters to begin with?

5. If someone throws himself infront of your tank during a protest, you can do this:
Stop. Like these tankers had the decency to do. If only momentarily.

11. Apples, oranges
That protestor walked out in front a slow moving tank, tens of yards in front of it. He did not litterally step in front of a moving tank.

Are you actually comparing our troops to the slaughter at tieneman? That takes some balls.

You try traveling at 42 mph with 61 tons of steel and see how quick you can stop it.

13. A,O - You're right. We invaded a sovereign country and murdered hundreds of 1000s
The Chinese regime massacred hundreds of their own people in Tiananmen Square. The range of estimates is from 500 to more than 2000.

Different, yes. Better? If you sincerely believe we did the right thing in Iraq, you don't belong here.

What in hell are American tanks still doing in Baghdad more than six years after we invaded? Ask yourself that question.

4. Do they ever report dissent from countries where the dictators are
pro-US?

I study too much history to do anything but sit on the side and watch developments in Iran. I'm pretty sure that there's an awful lot of foreign money involved.

6. We sponsored the Tiananmen Square protests too.
Remember that nothing happens in this world unless America wills it to happen.

7. Rubbish
Lots of protests take place. Sustaining them for over a week usually takes money that most countries don't have though.
