Hillbilly Armor?
I have never seen a single instance in history where a hillbilly up armored his 1994 Chevy S-10.

Where is a there a single news story showing a hillbilly digging through garbage and finding, then installing bullet proof lexan on his vehicle?

Hillbillies didn't sew kevlar suits together and rob a California bank with fully automatic AK-47s.

This whole nomenclature is wearing thin on this liberal "Hillbilly."

Road Warrior Scavenger seems more appropriate to me.

1. Is this in reference to a specific incident?

5. Listening to Mike Malloy
No specific thing, just seems misguided and simplification of the issue.

4. eh, I see Hillbilly in this instance as a term of endearment
Hillbilly, being one who can improvise and change his surroundings with found and cleverly engineered material - what it looks like be damned, so long as the dang thing works

6. Thats why we still have hillbillies.
Adaptation is key. But the phrase is throw about as a derogatory form of protection for our troops.

Either we are ok with this form of adaptation, and name it something to be proud of, or stop putting it down as a short coming.

I did four in the corps, so I don't blame anyone for doing all they can to protect themselves.

12. I always assumed the term referred to Beverly Hillbillies' Jethro during his "doublenought spy"phase
He armored up the old truck with cast iron junk so it would be bullet proof like James Bond's original Astin Martin.

13. How about "Good ol' boys"?
The term "liberal hillbilly" sounds like an oxymoron these days or at least liberal hillbillies seem to be a dying breed but rather than needlessly insult the few that remain and participate on DU maybe I could use the phrase "good ol' boys" anywhere I might have once been tempted to use the term hillbilly.

Would that be a more PC way to express my thoughts without insulting my liberal friends down in the holler?

16. Exactly my point.
Some of us made it out into the world and have family still there who would be considered hillbillies, hicks, backwards assed country f**ks, etc.

I'm not too concerned about the phrase or I would have said something before, it just seems that all liberals expect us to be conservative and uneducated.

I sometimes feel like the Geico caveman around here.

14. I guess I don't even know what a "hillbilly" IS. .
I always thought it was
1) someone who didn't live in town
2) someone who didn't have access to a regular education or health care..

Some people have apparently ascribed some racial aspect to it that I'm kind of fuzzy on. I was surprised to hear someone take vehement exception to the expression.

3) Southern Illinoisan to a Chicagoan. ;-)

There is an old feud here in Illinois between the north and the south of the state. I don't take part in it, in fact find it kind of funny. But there are some from this part of the state that highly resent the term being used to refer to them by "them pushy northerns". :)

I proudly claim my hillbilly ancestors from the Ozarks/Appalachians and don't mind admitting I enjoy going barefooted. One of those ancestors got an Illinois land grant from Lincoln for fighting for the north in the Civil War. And if I needed armor on my car, I'm sure I would find a way to get it done. (imagine a smilie with gigantic bare feet)
